Lenovo surplus outlet is offering the following machine for $999. I'd love someone to weigh in on this deal.

I plan on upgrading the warranty to a three year.

    Cold I'd say. Not a C2D. The R61 was a better deal

Nope, doesn't look very good. Core Duos are slower by 5% clock for clock then Core 2 Duos depending on app.

And the X3100 Intel gpu might be as fast or close to it (when Intel decides to release their T&L enabled drivers) then the ATI gpu that T60 has.

Only reason I could think you might get that machine is if you like 4:3 screens rather then the new widescreens.

Guess I'll be in the minority here and say that this is a great deal.

Considering the 14.1" t 60 is rare now (relative to 15.0/15.4's), and it's decked out with sxga+, 7200rpm hd, bt, fingerprint, dvdrw, 1gb (and ram is cheap)- pretty good price I'd say.

Best thing abou it imo is it's the very last thinkpad with a magnesium cased lid, exclusive to the 14.1" (15.4 and 15.0 are plastic with no roll cage).

If that's what I was in the market for and didn't need the latest processors, I'd buy it over a "New, Sealed in Box!" ( only opened for testing) gray market machine, but imo only, ymmv so dbafd.

I'm with Leon here. Being a fan of 4:3 screens who will only go to "short screen" kicking and screaming, I say go for it. For most folks, C2D processor is not going to make a huge difference. Only down side will be ability to eventually have the option for 64 bit. How soon that will be mainstream is anybodys guess - I'm speculating that T60 will have plenty of usefull life and you avoid some of the T61 issues. Yeah, there are some good values on T61's now. But I would trade the latest chips for the 4:3 right now. In fact, I just picked up a new T60 myself. I do like the 6 cell flush battery too.

Good point, forgot about that. I know quite a few around here sent their flexviews back because they were too dim... so obviously 150 nits will be WAY too dim for them, but at 200 nits iwpbfm, so ymmv.

(and dreamer and I are way too familiar with each other's habits!)

Yeah but some people will say angles are "cheating" with flexview comparisons (or that they don't care to look at their displays from an angle). So head on, these are my favorites (from Hoya at thinkpads forum):

And now the Flexview really shines in there... :p

I have that computer you are looking at, got it about a year ago and it works well, good amount of power and 1 grand sounds like a really god deal to me for this solid notebook. I got the computer as a gift so I don't know the cost of it, but back then it would go for at least $1400. For the average user, it would be great. It is adequate for games, but it is really good for internet surfing music, video editing cd/dvd burning etc. So if this really appeals to you, I say go for it man.
