My T60 just came yesterday and I have some questions about it.

    1. I disabled the Embedded Security Chip thing and set it to Inactive from the BIOS. However, every time I start up, it still "checks the status of the embedded security chip and after a while a box pops up telling me I disabled the chip and to manually log on to Windows. Is there a way to disable that message and just have it boot directly to the desktop without having to enter a password?

    2. Shutting down takes at least 30 seconds, is that normal?

    3. Towards the end of a start-up, when it gets to the desktop, the screen flashes black once and then goes back to the desktop, is this normal?

    4. How exactly do I uninstall/disable/keep from starting with windows the various unnecessary ThinkVantage software that came with it? I was reading this thread ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=138227) about which ones to keep but can't figure out how to uninstall them.

    Thanks

    2. Yes, it takes my comp around this time to shut down as well.

    3. Uhhh.... I don't think so. Doesn't happen with my computer.

You can completely disable the thinkvantage security within windows you need to disable the fingerprint software to stop the checking controller .....etc. And also disable the fingerprint from the BIOS. The screen flash happens to me when my computer is in screen saver and i press the mouse or a button to bring it back. I had posted about that like a week ago but nobody had any good answers.

    Or just dump CSS.

    1. You probably forgot to turn off some setting - check your ThinkVantage softaware such as your Password Manager or perhaps the TPM Software that may be set to auto-login if you have the TPM on. I do not know the details to check this as I did what ZaZ said right when I got my laptop - I took out CSS / RnR... I didn't get mine with the fingerprint reader.

    2. That actually is not really "normal". It depends upon all the software and programs you have your laptop running. Mine will turn off in about 12 seconds starting from when I press "Shut Down" amongst the 3 choices in Windows XP Professional. If you have Windows Vista it also makes a difference. The bottom line is how your T60 is set up software/configuration wise.

    3. That probably is because you most likely have the ATi graphics card. I believe it is an option in the Catalyst Control Center, something about a Refresh Rate Override - there are two settings for it. Just go around in the settings and try to disable anywhere that you see that.

    4. I just used Add / Remove programs, I think.

    Thanks for the answers.

Uninstalling CSS fixed the problem with the security chip, and the shutdown time has been reduced by removing a few more things I didn't need.

The black screen flash still happens every time I start up though. My T60 has integrated graphics so ATI is not causing it. I do think it does have something to do with a refresh rate or brightness setting somewhere, just not sure where.

One more question: If I were to leave my laptop on overnight to download some fies, should I leave it in Standby?

Do not leave it in standby - your computer does nothing in standby.

You want to leave it on, to DL the files, standby is just like another way of shutting down the system, but instead of actually shutting off it just goes to rest on low power.
