I've been looking through the threads, (unsuccessfully) trying to find something I read about backing up something as soon as you get your thinkpad. What is it, why do you do it and how do you do it?

Hmm, well nothing comes to mind but I would sure hope that you could get any new laptop to it's original state with a format and the CD's that it comes with.

That's just the thing, it doesn't come with CD's. It comes with a Vista upgrade CD and when you boot it up it's all ready to go.

Oh yeah, I heard about the Vista upgrade CD. One a side-note, I don't understand why they don't give you full version with a new laptop. Back to upgrade CD. I've heard that it only works if you have Windows XP already installed. It used to be that say, if you have a Windows 98 CD, you could have a formatted hard drive, boot to the Windows 2000 "upgrade" CD, and it would ask for win98, you just put the win98 disk in and it lets you install windows 2000. But with Vista upgrade, you actually already have to have Windows whatever installed.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, this is just what a buddy told me, you know how rumors can get.

If this is true, that is lame for a new laptop to come with an upgrade, and lame Microsoft requires you upgrade. I want a clean install, not an upgrade!

Burn off the recovery discs. It is in the ThinkVantage folder on the start menu.
