i'm trying to install ubuntu the linux OS
and my C;// says 74gb free of 105gb which means 30 gb was in use
and when i tried to partition the drive i could only get
    30gb apart from it
so i went and saw the properties of all the things in c://
but they only add up to 12.3gb
    how could this be?????
is the only way to clean install vista?
because i don't have the CD for it

Remember that the Vista OS takes a huge amount of space, so the remaining 17.7GBs are taken by Vista and quite possibly backups/hibernate.

The restore partition also takes up several GB of space.
