    Hey everyone,

I just got my T61 and I think there is already a hardware problem with it. Has anyone else with a T61 been getting a loud grinding/clicking noise from their system. I'm getting a VERY noticle loud grinding noise from around where the left speaker is and the 2 heat sink/fan areas in the back left corner of the unit. If you push down on the plastic part of the left speaker it gets louder. Its almost like something is rubbing up against something else... like a fan or something. Or could it be the hard drive? I have the 100GB 7200rpm drive. I cant help but think its a fan though.

Any suggestions or thoughts? Looks like I'll be using my upgraded on-site warranty much quicker than I thought, LOL!

    All info is appreciated!

UPDATE: I rebooted and don't hear it anymore... weird. I wonder what it was. I wonder if it will come back.

i read about a t61 i think it was, that the fan blades were hitting a wire that was not secured properly....it was an easy fix by the owner of the unit.

Thanks gjg... any idea when they posted this, or whom it was. I think that might very well be the issue. Its not doing it right now... it might have shifted back into place or something.

It only happened on my first boot up, and seemed to happen only when the fans were running.

i guess on that clip the background noise is actually the fan working, but closer to the end of the clip is the buzzing noise

I'm a bit afraid maybe that's attributable to the poor quality of the compal plant which makes both the T61 and the inspirons.
Dude, you got a dell ! lol

I know you're joking, but everyone talking about that can really scare us. With all the blue screen stories, the chinese guy pointing out flexing case, cheap lcd installation etc in his review- now this; might just be coincidence they are made in a new plant, but it was enough to make me chicken out and cancel.

I know it's probably still the best 14.1" business machine out there, and I got such a good price (although obviously a good thing, it also kind of scared me- how cheap you cna even buy a T series this time around, even with the "secret" discounts).

Oh well. Back to square one. I've gotta quit reading these forums. Bad stories about every model. The more popular they are, the greater number of negative stories just by % alone.

Good luck w/your noise problem OP. Hope eveything works out.

UPDATE: I think its definitely the fan. Luckily I also bought the on-site service (with Thinkpad Protection) That came in handy already! They are going to come replace the fan if need be on Tuesday!

P.S. I love the machine.. its is SOOOOO nice!
Very solidly built and the screen is just fine!

lol yeah honestly the fact that my ship date was 8/3 was a small part of it. Glad I could help! i'll probably be ordering preconfigured from a retailer, if I can find one with xp for cheap.

The real ship date probably isn't 8/3. Thats due to a glitch in the Lenovo system... at least thats the story that Lenovo has been singing for quite some time... who knows if its true.

    @skibunny
I don't think Lenovo knows the concept of queuing. I ordered my laptop on May 12, and in the mean time I hear these stories of people ordering after the 20th and having their laptops come, laptops coming out of order (people who ordered the same one twice at separate times getting the later one first) etc. It seems more like a stack to me.

    yep i agree.

Doesn't even seem to be the parts, coz some ppl who ordered/shipped in june got webcams and a graphics card.

perhaps it's because the price was higher in june than in may, lol. buggers.
