When I run my new T61 on battery, it creates a lot of hissing noise. This is definitely not normal. Anyone else experiencing the same problem? I think I will just return my unit; hope they won't charge me restocking fee for that.

Its a normal noise that almost all intel based notebooks make when going into various power saving states. Can be stopped be disabling the CPU power management.

Thanks for your reply, Dietcoke. But I am not sure if we are referring to the same sound (noise). The hissing noise that I am hearing is not a consistent noise; it comes and goes. It sounds like there is some loose connection inside the unit. It is very intrusive noise when you are in a quiet room.

Yea, the CPU noise is never a constant noise since the processor will go in and out of the sleep states in random intervals. Where abouts is the noise located?

CPU noise? Theres no such thing.

The noise is coming from the back near the vent area.
