+1 right here.
I'm quite upset at the fact that there's a machine that could possibly meet my requirements but sports a wrong keyboard layout, while the possible "retro" ThinkPad might have a proper 7-row keyboard but doesn't meet my needs in other respects.

What I'm trying to say is, based on the photos, seems like Lenovo has totally redesign the bigger machine and the result is surely not Retro we are expecting or talking about. So I am wondering, even if they eventually going to make a Retro Thinkpad, maybe it won't be for bigger size since they are just refreshed. Maybe 2-3 year/generation ahead? Or maybe they can fit in the 'retro' screen and keyboard in this chassis, that will be great. But that will mean the 4k 16:9 they already stocked will be used only for one generation.
Another possibility is Lenovo make both modern P series and >=15" Retro series at the same time. But will they? Since both will be expensive (unattractive and wont be top seller?). -
Considering the retro polls strongly favored 14" screen and thin and light, I doubt a 15"-17" workstation with server components would be the result of the retro.
What I don't really understand is why Lenovo can't implement the 7 row keyboard layout as a standard--not the LED buttons or keycap, just the layout. That does not seem to interfere with any of the mainline Thinkpad design philosophies and would please a lot of users. There are many other features of older designs that I'd like to have back, but the keyboard layout is the first in the list (it and the older hinge are the two most important for me). -
David Hill made a new post on this topic: http://blog.lenovo.com/en/blog/retro-thinkpad-time-to-think

I can agree with this. I am a new used T 510 owner and love my T 510. Really one of the last classic ThinkPads in design. And your post is eminently sensible. A good model to base a Retro ThinkPad new model on. Nice handy screen size, excellent functionality in that form factor, what we need in a full service laptop design.

Since the last update on the Retro Thinkpad was on Aug 17, maybe we will get some type of update at the Consumer Electronics Show. CES starts on Jan 6.

You may have noticed that its not part of the announcement. Why? The machine is not ready yet, but ThinkScopes was told that development is on track. However, right now Lenovo faces a supply issue for the screen of this machine. Originally, Lenovo wanted to show off a prototype on CES, but because of the supply issue, this won´t happen.BinkNR likes this. -
etz.
Thanks for posting the link to Thinkscopes.com article on the new 2016 lineup. It will be very interesting to see what David Hill and company have decided for the final design of the Retro Thinkpad. -
CES 2017 is Jan 5-8th. Wonder if the classic / retro Thinkpad will make an appearance, or whether it's dead and buried.
-
I was wondering the same thing. Sure hope the Retro Thinkpad goes into full production in the near future.

They have had ample time to do something. If it isn't announced at CES, it probably never will. -
CES might still be a little too early. Next year is a big anniversary, but in the fall...
-
Disappointment reigns with no update or availability at CES on the Retro Thinkpad. If Lenovo does not announce availability this fall or a CES 2018 with the
CannonLake chip, we all need to stop waiting and purchase another machine. -

Waiting? I'm waiting on a good deal for the new X1 Carbon. Looks like they finally got it right. -
Well, 13.5" 3:2 screens ( as used by microsoft) are now available

No one loved their X301 more than I. http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/second-hand-thinkpad-x301-owners-thread.681991/ But, after owning a Surface for the last three years, using it docked at work with a 23" display/full sized keyboard and "au natural" on the road, I can never go back to lugging a 3.5lb notebook on my travels. For me, you can't go home again.
