Lenovo announced their new 2020 ThinkPad P series today. P15/P17 are redesigned from the ground up compared with P53 and P73 (even though they look pretty identical to the older models).
Notably, both implement a proprietary modular design for the GPU that puts the graphic chip on a daughter board, which should allow for more CPU/GPU combos compared with the previous generation.
Also, Lenovo claims an improved cooling system with a stronger CPU cooler and wider fan ventilation holes. Compared with the P53 and P17, the Quadro RTX 5000 is supposed to be able to consume more energy (90 W instead of 80 W for the P15, 110 W instead of 90 W for the P17) thanks to the better cooling system
For the new 2020 P series, there is a new performance mode called "Ultra performance mode", which should enable users to disable temperature limits and let the fan run louder.

Edit: I have found some extremely detailed spec sheets for P15 / P17 here:

I was expecting after the T series and X series, AMD Ryzen 4ks would get their chance to be employed by the P department...

Maybe next year. Seems like all manufacturers are shy about AMD in the workstation area.

Looks like 2.5GbE's time will never come
Speaking of shyness, do we even know how many PCIe lanes a Renior APU has? Best guess is 16, which is more than the 12 of Picasso/RavenRidge. -
I guess i should go for the Legion 5 be use as a workstation, till the arrival of Ryzen 5000series and see...

A Ryzen Workstation is now in the works from HP... If Kenobi continues to wait and see, Dell might be the next to jump in.

There might be a T15g version of the P15 with GeForce RTX Super GPUs: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Think...he-GeForce-RTX-2080-Super-Max-Q.487938.0.html

Just ordered my P15 to replace my P52.
i9-108850H
32GB ram
1 TB PCIe SSD
RTX 3000 6 GB
4K HDR 400 / 600 nit
Have seen zero real life reviews so far. Naturally I’m a little nervous. My P52 was pretty solid though.
Anyone else pull the trigger yet?

There’s a few folks in the Thinkpad reddit who’ve received theirs and they seem to like them, although no one has really gone into any detail.
I’m seriously considering a T15g, just trying to hold out for the right config and a review or two.ike2k likes this.
