i found out that lenovo changed their website, offering "New ThinkPad T61" right after I placed my order of 7658 T61 at 11:59pm est on 08/01/2007.

These two new model are 8891 8897.
They are both 14in version of T61.

Do these two have better build quality?

It's the new 14'' standard screen ratio version of the T61. I don't think Lenovo has started shipping these out yet. You'll have to wait a couple weeks before anyone receives one and give us a review on it.

The 9 cell battery is offered for that model. I bet it's just the T60 shell with T61 internals.

    Edit:

I take back what I said earlier. A couple people on this forum have already received theirs.

Maybe there are changes made to lid, like a roll cage and plastic lid.

Man the offset effect somehow looks more severe on the 4:3 version.

Finally... now Lenovo just needs to change the graphic on the T-series homepage that says 14.1" standard aspect screens are not available.

I'm just happy that the 8889-CTO I ordered the other week was still cheaper than a 4:3 model I just configured the same way (and which only has a 1-year warranty) :)

Interestingly the warranty is not upgradeable beyond one year WITHOUT being tied in with the protection service. Is that a new policy?

(FYI... the tabook says the 4:3 models also have the chassis and screen rollcage just like the widescreens)

Maybe they are not sure it can last for more than one year. ;)
