i found out that lenovo changed their website, offering "New ThinkPad T61" right after I placed my order of 7658 T61 at 11:59pm est on 08/01/2007.
These two new model are 8891 8897.
They are both 14in version of T61.
Do these two have better build quality?

Same old same old.
Just a 4:3 screen. -
i think these "new" t61s are just standard aspect 14 inch laptops that everyone here wants
-
It's the new 14'' standard screen ratio version of the T61. I don't think Lenovo has started shipping these out yet. You'll have to wait a couple weeks before anyone receives one and give us a review on it.
The 9 cell battery is offered for that model. I bet it's just the T60 shell with T61 internals.
Edit:
I take back what I said earlier. A couple people on this forum have already received theirs.

Man the offset effect somehow looks more severe on the 4:3 version.
-
Finally... now Lenovo just needs to change the graphic on the T-series homepage that says 14.1" standard aspect screens are not available.
I'm just happy that the 8889-CTO I ordered the other week was still cheaper than a 4:3 model I just configured the same way (and which only has a 1-year warranty)
Interestingly the warranty is not upgradeable beyond one year WITHOUT being tied in with the protection service. Is that a new policy?
(FYI... the tabook says the 4:3 models also have the chassis and screen rollcage just like the widescreens) -
