Hi all. I just bought a new wide-screen Thinkpad T60 last week (ATI X1400 video card, 1 gig ram, intel core 2 duo processor at 2.166 ghz) and I was hoping someone could answer a question for me about the fan. Whenever the computer is on, at all times there is the sound of a fan running that I can hear on the right side of the computer. It's not too loud, but it's always there. The main fan on the left side of the computer comes on periodically, but is not always on. Is it normal for there to be some sort of fan on constantly, and that it is somewhere on the right side of the computer? I was thinking maybe it's the video card fan? I'm hoping I'm just being hypercritical because I just got the computer and this is normal. Thanks so much for the help.

It's propably your harddrive? I have a 120 GB Toshiba HDD in my T60WS and I actually tried to disconnect the harddrive to figure out if that's where the "fan" noise was coming from - and then the sound dissappeared. So now I'm thinking of buying another harddrive... just waiting for the hybrid drives to become available before I make my decision.

Thank you for the response. :) I know that when my hard drive is accessed there is the normal "coffee grinder" sound but was not aware that it might make a constant sound that sounds like a fan. That is a normal hard drive sound, from the right part of the computer? Thanks

Mine T60 also has this "fan" noise. I also would like to know if this is normal

Is yours always on, and oriented towards the right part of your computer (i.e. separate from the sound that the main fan makes when it comes on out of the left vents)?

If its from the right side I am pretty sure that its the hard drive, as all T60s have only one fan. And its on the left. Do you have the 7200 RPM HDD? That could also be why.. it has a steady "whir" to it.... mine has the Seagate 7200.1 Momentus and I can hear it, but it is not very prominent. You could try adjusting the automatic power management settings using NotebookHardwareControl... I don tknow if that would help. Automatic Acoustic Management is locked on Seagate HDDs so nothing can be changed there....

Yes, it's always on and oriented towards the right. I have a 5400 RPM hard drive.
EDIT: Ok, it's the hard drive, http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?p=263572#263572

Yep, I was just going to post that link to my other thread as well. Sounds like it's definitely the hard drive. FYI I also have the 5400 rpm one. Thanks all.
