So, I just got a new x200 today. I've never owned a thinkpad before, and as such have never really used a trackpoint. I'm sure I will get used to it, but I figured I would ask now if there are any particular advantages to one trackpoint cap vs another before I get used to one in particular.

    Thoughts?

I would like to hear your comments about adjusting to a trackpoint in the days or weeks to come. I was considering an X200 but lack of a touchpad has made me slightly weary. I have NEVER used a trackpoint before and haven't actually found a place that carriers a notebook with a trackpoint...

Sure, perhaps I'll make a new post about my transition from mouse -> touchpad -> trackpoint. I never really used a touchpad before I got my np5790, and it took a bit but I finally got used to it to the point I like it. I expect a similar experience with the touchpoint, indeed just from playing around with it I'm already starting to like how much more precision I get compared to the touchpad.

Heh one of my main beefs so far was that you couldn't just 'tap' the trackpoint to click like you could with the touchpad, but I found the settings for it. It's more of a 'press' than a 'tap' but with it all the way to 'quick press' it's actually not so bad.

For non-gaming use, I personally think the track-point is the best. It's a shame that not many manufacturers make laptops with a track point. However, if you plan to play games, having an external mouse is a must.

Well, the only games I would be playing on the x200 would be civ4, which I imagine would be fine with at trackpoint. I can't really imagine playing any sort of fast paced game with either a trackpoint -or- a touchpad heh.

Please dont laugh, but in the game "Fish Frenzy" the trackpoint actually works better than the touch pad.

I prefer the eraser head for the grip (this was actually the older track point cap a few years ago).

Yes, plus you can acquire those in different aftermarket colors. (or used to)

One of the other two (with the bumps) is also available in blue for some HP models.

When buying them, you have to make sure the post size/shape is the same as well.

Heh, well to follow up after only a day of trackpoint use, I have to say I'm hooked. I really love the middle scroll button too, works a lot better than the scroll strip on the touchpad I used to used. I do wish I could remap it to simulate rolling the mouse wheel instead of just straight up scrolling though; perhaps there is an option somewhere?
