Questions about the performance difference between X1 Carbon with 4600u and 4550u CPU have popped up frequently. They were hard to answer, because the X1 is the first laptop to adopt the 4550u and because this configuration is still unavailable. Here comes a first performance comparison based on PassMark:

    • 4550u
      Passmark Rating 1,974
      CPU Mark 3,849
      2D Graphics Mark 446
      3D Graphics Mark 577
      Memory Mark 1,969
      Disk Mark 3,028
    • 4600u
      Passmark Rating 2,190
      CPU Mark 4,693
      2D Graphics Mark 695
      3D Graphics Mark 527
      Memory Mark 2,145
      Disk Mark 2,174

I have found this data on the PassMark website:
    PassMark Software - Display Baseline ID# 203952
    and
    PassMark Software - Display Baseline ID# 196887

Interesting. Looks like the biggest advantage of the 4550u is in the DiskMark test. Strange. I wonder if they had identical SSDs. Other than that, there's some minor improvement in the 3D graphics score, and the rest is (as expected) weaker, and sometimes substantially so, than the 4600u. Definitely a mixed bag.

Strangely, they were using the same SSD: SAMSUNG MZNTD256HAGL-000L9

Edit: The DiskMark results vary a lot. An other X1 with the same SSD scored 2,849.
