I've never seen this happen before on a brand new machin.. I've had it for about 2/3 weeks and I ran windows updates, etc. It seems that almost everyday when I power up the system runs CHKDSK. Is my hard drive dying or is it on its way out?

I'd love to know before I start a warranty request...

    Thanks

Boot into ThinkVantage via F11 and run the basic hardware diagnostics. Are you improperly shutting down the computer? That's the only other thing that can trigger chkdsk upon reboot.

Are you dual booting more than one OS?

Could be one the updates breaking the shutdown process.

I'm power down normally. This makes a good point. When doing updates, some of them would fail on the install. I'm powering down normally. Everytime it updates, it runs through 20-30 updates and then it says it fails.

I would request a warranty replacement of the drive.

Try installing only few updates at once until you find the failing one/s and leave those till the end. Normally that works. Certain updates require prerequisites while windows update puts them in wrong order and thus shoots itself in the foot, lol. I have seen it so many times...

I have never seen an update hose the storage device state and force chkdsk's. Lightening storms, yes. But not Windows update.

If the OP doesn't resolve this pretty quick, I would request a replacement storage device.

Also there is an issue with conflicting updates using windows update. Were I home, I could post the three files that cause the failure, but googling it should help as that is how I found out.

I just submitted a warranty request using the ESC+ tool via IBM... how long does it usually take for a response? It'll probably take at least a week or so so. I might hold off on the windows updates and just stop them... -sigh-

The Windows updates weren't that big of a deal. Basically, once you know which ones conflict... You can select them and install them one at a time... then install the rest in bulk. That's what I did. As for ESC+, my experience has been pretty rapid initial contact 24-48 h after submission with a tech at my location within 24-48 h after that... If it's a CRU, then it's best to call in so that they can over night the part and you can install it!

Updates can't kill hdd but they can break the shutdown process and make the OS think it wasn't rebooted/shut down gracefully. I have seen it on many XP and W7 machines.

If the OP gets through the updates cleanly and the machine works fine after that, I stand corrected. The Update history and event logs will indicate if the shutdown and startup state is dirty for the OS. That investigation probably needs to happen.

If after all of the updates have been applied the machine still misbehaves, it could be a faulty storage device. Again, there should be some sort of indication in the event logs.

More triage in the logs will provide a better indication of the culprit.
