Just a couple of hours ago I received my new Thinkpad :).

Because I had purchased three years on-site warranty, but didn't get any registration information (yet) I went to the warranty look-up to check out what the status is. Here you can see it:

Well the strange thing is, the warranty is already 'activated' (although no on-site) and ends in 2011. The standard warranty however is three years so it should end in 2012.

What to conclude out of this? Must I conclude that this particular laptop (serial number is unique right) already was activated by another user in the past? Is this a returned laptop that has been sold for new again?

I specificly asked if the laptop was new, since the X300 isn't produced anymore. So maybe, if it isn't, I can get a discount ;).

Somebody told me it could be the manufacture date. Well indeed behind the serial number stand the numbers: 08/05, which could be the date of manufacture. Than, the expire date would be correct and I should only wait till the warranty update :)

Was this purchased through Lenovo or a reseller/eBay?

When I bought my X200 from TigerDirect in June 2009, the 3 years warranty also started Nov. 2008. I don't really care because it's just 8 months. And, I thought that the spec said that I would get 1 year, but the system came with 3 years warranty.

You can call up Lenovo to have the warranty reset by showing them a copy of your sales invoice (assuming this reseller is a Lenovo authorised reseller).

Lenovo activates its warranty in the same week the notebook is shipped from the factory, hence any old reseller stock will have warranties activated before that, indicating the date the unit was shipped. If the reseller is not an authorised reseller, then there is nothing you can do.

That sums it up. I've contacted Lenovo and the warranty date is going to be updated.

    Thanks for the accurate info!
