    Hey all,

I'm considering buying the Y460 and this thread has been really helpful. Three hopefully quick questions - and my apologies if I missed the answers somewhere in the 81(!) pages here...

-- How is the screen quality? I'm not a professional photo editor by any means, but I do enough amateur stuff that a decent screen with good color representation and contrast levels is important to me.

-- What's the battery life like when using the integrated graphics card vs. the battery life using the discrete graphics card?

-- When using the integrated graphics card, are there heat issues (clearly there are when using the discrete card)?

    Thanks for your help!

    1. I think the screen looks great on the 14inch. It's only 1366x768 but it looks very crisp and bright.

    2. You can lose more than an hour using the ATI card and even more if your stressing it.(Wouldn't use the ATI on battery only if you have to)

Intel HD: 4 hours + at 100% charge

ATI: Less than 3 hours at 100% charge

    3. The Intel HD keeps nice and cool.

AboutThreeFitty: You mean 4 hours with wifi? And how about the screen brightness? Isn't possible to underclock some components manually?

Still can't understand how come it reaches "only" 4 hours? Acer TimelineX with switchable HD 5650xIntel HD and i5 430M has up to 8 hours of battery life (as one user told me and specifications confirmed). The older Lenovo Y550 with P7450 and GT 240M reaches 4 hours with wi-fi although it has no switchable graphics. What has lenovo made badly?

^^^ Yah at least 4 hours on wifi watching videos, and general tasks with the brightness on 3(plenty bright) You can go into the power settings and set the cpu on various levels, but its not under clocking it. I don't know about the Acer but they have always had good battery life.

So I have a question for anyone out there who has a Y560. During normal usage it stays in a comfortable heat range. In fact, the only place that has ever gotten hot is around the CPU and GPU. But when using the processor or GPU a lot, it gets hot. When I played Assassins Creed, it overheated (100+ degrees C). This baby gets hot. I realize that because I have the i7 and the 5730 it would get hot, but is this ridiculously hot normal? Should I be worried?

I just received my Y560 with the i5 and switchable graphics. It runs really fast but it actually comes with a lot of software that I am not even sure if I should uninstall.

With Programs like ReadyComm 5, MuteSync, Easy Capture, Direct Share, Split Screen, Media Show, and Idea Notes (there might be other programs but I don't remember right now) I am not sure if they are useful or if I should uninstall them. Which programs do you consider I should unistall? Thanks for your help.

I uninstalled all of the programs except Split Screen. But for some reason now Split Screen is not working anymore. The problem is that I thought a copy of this software came in the backup folder called Lenovo, but I can't seem to find it. How can I get Split Screen to install the program again????

I already got split Screen working, but now I have another problem. I made a partition in my hard drive and now OneKey Recovery doesn't work. I get a message saying "the program cannot find the service partition. This function is currently unavailable". I tried installing the software again and even erased the partition and left the hard drive as it was at the beginning, but I still get the same message. How can I fix this problem so OneKey Recovery works again?

No they do not have rapiddrive andsomeone posted that his got very hot and shut down after a few hours of gaming. Other have posted that they had no heat issues.

The i7 runs hot and maybe a laptop cooling pad should be purchased as well.

Go to Lenovo Power management. On the lower right hand corner you will see three icons side by side. The i, a cogwheel and a question mark. Click that cogwheel in between the i and ? and go to the smart control tab. There should be a checkbox for the light sensor.

Need help with some questions about the Y560:

I'm looking to buy one very soon and I had some questions for the owners:

How thin is it, or how thin it feels hands on?

Is it too heavy for its size?

Battery life? Is there a diffrence bwtn i5 and i7 in bat. life?

Also if you can recomend, I got two good prices $854.00 for the i5 configuration but it has a 500gb 5200 hard drive VS 500 7200 on the i7 AU model.

The AU model has a cupon for $949.00 total

Is a $100.00 diffrence. I'm wandering if the i7 has switchable grafics or not.

I don't do gaming, my wife is a mechanical ingenieer and she uses some demanding programs both GPU and CPU intensive but I don't think is made for quad-core. I like to do some video editing but thats about as hard as I will push it.

    What do u recomend?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hello everyone ,

i have got my new Y560 today , all in all it took lenovo 2 days to process the order and ship it and shipping( came from their NC facility) took 3 days .

    my Y560 IS configured with I7 - 4Gb model.

alright here are the first thoughts :

this laptop is a fingerprint magnet .
    trackpad and keyboard feel great
since its been less than day i cant say much abt anything but
you can hear the fan , the noise is quite noticeable .
core temp range from 54c to 65c for general browsing (havent observed on a game yet).
battery lasts for 3 hours for general usage (surfing the web , itunes on the background).

Got to say tho , it comes with a Ton of CRAPware

thickness is slightly more than a inch , and it feels heavier than it looks.

plz excuse me for my English and spellings .

if you have any more questions , let me know and i will try to help .

    :)

    Hello,

First post on here and I have a few questions about the y460

I am a highschool senior looking to buy a laptop for college next year. The y460 caught my eye with its specs and decent battery life. I want to be able to do some gaming on the laptop.

My only issue is i have heard about all the problems it has with overheating. Im just wondering is it still a good choice to get or do you guys recommend a different laptop with similar specs.

    Thanks

Honestly, you should get a Thinkpad. I wouldn't jeopardize on y460 or y560. You can spec out some thinkpads quite well and can play decent games on them. My thinkpad has been dropped, kicked, and punched MANY times and not a single thing is wrong with it. I hate even having a book resting on top of my y460 because it feels so weak. You could always buy both. :p

If you can wait till June, i would recommend you go for the Envy 14 which was just announced by HP. It meets or exceeds the Y460 specs as well as having a advertised battery life of 7 hours on switchable graphics and an additional 7 hours with the battery slice.

Agh, I can't decide whether to get the Y560 I7 for $950 deal! I keep thinking I should wait to see if anything better comes out (I don't need it for 2 months) but I don't really know of Dell or HP doing anything new.

I am excited about the Envy 14, too. Of course, an equivalent configuration is probably going to be $200 or $300 more expensive.

Also, considering the Envy 15 ran super hot, I am suspicious.

If you are considering the i7 cpu then it's going to run hotter under load than the i5 in the Y460 or Envy 14/15/17. The current i7 cpus the Ideapads use are the old quad cores which run hotter than the i5. Also any Ideapad with a quad core i7 will also lack switchable graphics decreasing your battery life and increasing your heat.

There won't be a i3 atleast that's the impression I got from the representive from HP. Check this video, they didn't mention i3, they say the default processor is i5

I would assume that it would be the lowest i5 the 430

First off, thanks everyone for your reviews. Helped me decide to pull the trigger on the y460 for $839 in Canada. Heating wasn't so much an issue for me, my gaming will be casual and shouldn't involve any system hogs (mostly strategy games like Civ, MTW).

That aside, can we get a rollcall on satisfaction thus far, specifically with build quality? Mine has yet to ship, so I'm close to the point of no return!

I have been looking around for a new laptop as my Dell Studio just took a major dump this last week.

I have always wanted to try a Lenovo and the price on the Y560 right now is awesome. However I wanted to get a laptop with a SSD this time so I was wondering if this is possible.

    Plan on getting the Y560

Then replace the hard drive with this:
Newegg.com - Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2MH080G2R5 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Then for the extra hard drive space get a caddy
2nd Bay SATA HDD (or SSD) drive caddy for Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 [OBHD-SATA-SATA-B] - $42.00 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

and put the 500gb hard drive that come with the Y560 in it.

I have a couple external optical drives that I can use to in the mean time as I hardly ever use a cd or dvd anyway,

Is there any problems or suggestions before I make the plunge.

It will be a race for brands to make switchable graphics enabled laptops now. Who'll offer something w/ switchable graphics (except Acer TimelineX) in Europe first, will get my money. :p Lenovo takes itstime already... actually 3 months after the official launch. So I hope that some brand will finally bring something to replace my old desktop with...

edit: Has anyone spotted TimelineX series in NA?

I have the i7 core. The max battery life on the power saver battery option is around 3 hours. (If you go SUPER energy saver option, my friend who just got his, says his maxes at 4hours at 100%)

As do I. I have it and I can confirm his claims! Sound is just...orgasmic if you dont mind me saying. The vent is NOT a problem at all unless you are a lefty. The palmrests BARELY get warm. I just love it. I am a bit anal abotu the glossy surface. dust and fingerprints attract. a microfiber cloth helps.

    again, +1

Honestly, if you are going to spend AROUND 1000. I'd just jump for the y560. It is MUCH more worth it. You can decide for the i5 or i7 core. i5 will give more batteries but i7 is just great for entertainment. anything else just isnt worth it.

Well if that's the case, the fan runs pretty silent. It wont be noticable even if you game since the speakers of the laptop just blows everything else away.

However i think you could get more of your money's worth from buying another lenovo laptop that isnt a y560 ot 460.
