Hi all, I'm new to this forum.
I ordered the Y460 on 03/11/10, estimated shipping date is 03/30/10.
I will keep you posted and do a review once it arrived.
-
Good luck! We're looking forward to your opinion.

1. Is RapidDrive there? After get get the first 2 boots over with, measure the time it takes your machine to boot from off to Windows. You could also check the bios and see what is in there.
2. Does it run hot? Use it for a few hours and tell us if the palmrest is comfortable, the keyboard is not hot, and if you can use it on your lap (be careful with this one we wouldn't want you burned).
There are some other things like how many USB ports, switchable graphics and battery life but the heat and rapiddrive are good starts.
Edit: Oh and your specs. -
The Y460 isn't configurable on the U.S. site, so I'd expect the specs to be the default ones.
As for heat, what's a little burnt flesh in the name of science? -
I ordered the Y460 too... just waiting for it to get here.
On a side note I know a few people in my MBA program that use the Y450 and only have good things to say about them. Nothing about them randomly shutting off or over heating. -
Just called Lenovo, inquiring about the release date/specs of the Y560. Here's what the sales rep told me:
1. Regarding the exact release date for the Y560, all he would say was "check back Wednesday."
2. When I asked about the RapidDrive feature (SSD/HDD Hybrid), he told me that in mid-April, the Y460 will be relaunched to include this feature and the Y560 will launch with it.He wouldn't go into any further specs with me. Of course, we all know they will offer at least i3 and i5 builds, no idea if the i7 version will be available here, though.
It goes without saying how happy this makes me since the whole reason I started looking at the Y560 in the first place was b/c of the RD feature. And to find out that it may launch with it instead of this Fall is even better.
The only bad thing is they launched the Y460 w/o RD and now, a month later, will relaunch them with it. Maybe some of you who were interested in this feature but have already pulled the trigger can cancel your order and wait another month for it to be available. -

I've read through most the pages on this thread but maybe I missed some things..... my main question is about the JBL speakers and the quality of them?
Also, how good are Lenovo screens?
I think it's a shame that they don't use the 2x2 Intel 6200n, or the 3x3 Intel 6300n, but maybe they wanted to conserve battery life with the Intel 1000n (1x2). I also think it's lame that they don't offer a powerful i5-540M version with only the Intel GMA HD for people that don't play video games but want a fast computer.
As a Linux user I pretty much don't want to mess with ATI, and I'm even wondering if that Rapid Drive will work with Linux? Or if it will be a windows 7 "only" thing? -
I own the Y550P and I find the speakers are good for laptop speakers. The review on the Y550 from this website says it is below other speaker/subwoofer models but this is my first one with that kind of setup.
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5405
"The Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 has above average sounding speakers, making use of two primary speakers up top and a subwoofer below. Listening to music and movies the speakers have good midrange and bass, but is still weak compared to other notebooks with dedicated subwoofers. Peak volume levels sound strong enough to be listened to in a small or mid-size room, but not loud enough to over-power a lot of background noise. For watching feature-length movies in large rooms the HDMI-port is a great way to pass digital audio over to a home theater system." -
I'm afraid that configuration with RD will be much more pricey. Will it be available without this extension as well? -
Yeah, I just looked at the pdf spec sheet for the Y450, Y550, Y650, and Y730 and it looks like the JBL was only offered on the Y650 model, as well as the new Y460 and Y560 models.
My car doesn't have a radio or car speakers so I was hoping to be able to just plug my laptop into my cigarette lighter and use my computer as my radio..... I guess I'll still need to get some external speakers. (this car is on it's last legs so putting a new stereo and speakers in it seems like a waste..... but since I was getting a new notebook soon I thought the best speakers I can get would be better than driving around with my earphones in my ears) -

Found a review with heat distribution on Y460...
Y460
or if interested to see its inner gut...
Y460-Inside -
I've just received shipping confirmation for my Y460. It should be here in a couple of days. I'll keep you posted...

Here is how I interpreted the review regarding the Y460's heat management capabilities (and translated by Google Translate):
The Y460 has "relatively poor heat control". Under full stress of its CPU and GPU, the laptop will have "a hot feeling", with the touchpad and right palmrest exhibiting "staggering" heat. As expected, the vent exhaust will be extremely hot. Also, this laptop should not be placed in one's lap while it is being used for "long periods of time". The product's high heat will make using it uncomfortable for gamers and business people who use it for long periods.
The translation left a lot to be desired. The gist of it confirms what many of us suspected:
Lenovo did practically nothing to remedy the heat management issues in the Y460, as was evidenced by its predecessor, the Y450.
I also read through the comments left by readers of this review article. A few of the posters believe the Y560 will have better heat management than the Y460 and have opted to switch to the larger model.
Despite its great specs and attractive price, I'm glad I decided not to get this laptop. There's a reason why there are programs out there that monitor temps of CPUs and GPUs.

Hopefully the Y560 will have a better cooling solution. Otherwise, Envy 15 here i come.
-
y560 has the same heat dissipation unit like the y460. There will be a slight difference (towards cooler) as the y560 is 1.6" bigger.
I think the y460 wont be hot when idle w/ ati off and on power saving mode but the processor will reach 101 C and get throttled on full load and ati on. -
Do some review and benches too ... love to hear and see it A.S.A.P ...
-
EDIT: Found it:

Heating solution looks the same but there aren't any numbers listed for what the heat is. I'd like to see those first before making any decision. -
I would say that even though Y560 has the same cooling solution as Y460, the heat shouldn't be problem. Just compare Y450 and Y550 with GT 240M discrete graphics. Y450 had substantive heat issues, while Y550 was OK in this case and the cooling solution was the same in both of them, wasn't it?
The graphics in Y560 (HD 5730) has similar TDP to GT 240M in Y550. Hence I presume that Y560 won't have problems with overheating. -
Yes, I think the Y560 will be fine with regards to heat management. I can't say the same about the Y460 regrettably.
-
The Y550P runs cool. That is my experience and the review on notebookreview also echos that. There seems to be nothing that would make the Y560 run hotter than the Y550P.
I do not really get what is wrong with the Y450/460 if it has the same cooling solution as the Y550P/Y560. For one you cannot get an i7 in a Y460 (not yet anyway) so I do not know what these i3 and i5 cpus are running so hot if they are getting the same cooling design as a cpu with an i7. Makes me think that maybe they are not.
I accept that quite a few sources are saying the Y4xx series runs too hot, I just do not know why. -

Does anyone like the yx50 design better than the newer versions.
-
-
Sure it makes sense. Integrated graphics GPUs still generate heat. Even with an integrated graphics GPU (Intel 4500 MHD), the Y450 reached temps of almost 100* F.
If that doesn't convince you how poor the Y450's and Y460's heat management capabilities are, nothing will.
In other words, if the Y450 couldn't handle the heat generated from an integrated graphics GPU, what makes anyone think that the Y460 (with basically the same heat management system) can handle a more powerful GPU (ATI 5650)?
Look at the bright side, if a Y460 owner goes camping, at least they'll have something to fry eggs and bacon on.
-
All this heat talk made me get some iced sweet tea lol, and also scouring the internet for a nice cooling pad solution. Since I'm always on the go I was really looking for portability and stumbled upon ThermaPak.com . Looks like a winner to me unless someone could inform otherwise. I also read a good amount of reviews from different vendors and user reviews and they all say somewhere in the line of "Great product until the crystal stuff turns to goo, then it's not as effective but still better than nothing. But it takes a few hours for that to happen and after some time of no use it turns back to crystal ready for maximum effect."
I'm in and out of classes and some I don't even need to use it so I think it'll work great. All that said, I still ordered a really nice cooling fan/pad for when I'm home lol. -
Huh, why must we all wait so long time?
I hope they will send Y560 to Europe right after being launched globallyIn China it should be already available in regard of being reviewed in several Chinese websites.
-
We do agree that since people complain that the Y450 runs too hot that is clearly was not built properly. I question if it does indeed have the same cooling system as the 15.6" version.
14.0 + Intel GFX + Core 2 Duo Temps > 15.6 + GT 240M + i7 ? That is some poor engineering. The i7 part is staggering which is a known heatbox.
Y450 Review: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5112&p=2
"The cooling system didn't do a particularly impressive job keeping the external temperatures down. After extended periods of use the touchpad and right palmrest gets quite warm and the bottom of the notebook reaches temperatures of nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature readings below were taken after stressing the system with performance benchmarks for 30 minutes and should reflect typical external temperatures after more than an hour of serious use."
That is terrible. Like I said I can play WoW for 3hrs in windowed mode on ultra settings and touch my pc and it is fine in a non a/c environment. Which is why I have no issue getting the Y560. -
Integrated and discrete graphics versions of most laptops have different cooling systems, with larger heatsinks, more heat pipes, and sometimes an improved fan in the discrete graphics models, so you can't base judgment on the heat management capabilities of the integrated graphics model.
Best option is probably to wait for more reviews of the Y460 with the Radeon 5650 to come out and see how much of an issue heat is. -

Great waiting you guys' test..
I just want to know the temp and the actual size... -
Congrats!
Can't wait to hear some reviews from You. -
Quick question, not sure if it's been asked or said, but what's the airflow direction on this baby? Do the bottom fans suck in air and the vents are well...vents lol. Or, is it opposite? I'm pretty sure the fans suck in air but while reading some reviews on cooling pads they say to make sure since some laptops do/could come opposite of that and having a cooling pad that does the opposite is pretty pointless I think. Gotta order something today since it's commin in tomorrow = )

Any deals out on the Y460?
