Taken from some Australian Lenovo resellers.
Observations: Very likely all new T-series laptops will have 16:9 screens now. Also, Lenovo is going back to Nvidia graphic cards. Let's hope there won't be any debacle like with the T61 series this time around.

If it's for real, I am glad that I get the T500 just a month ago. :)

Wow, if this is true, the T410, T510, and W510 will all be using the same graphics card... if the T410's WXGA+ means 1600x900, that'd be nice though.

I have just sold 3 of Thinkpad that had the Nvidia GPU and was hoping that this is the last time i have to sell my Thinkpad due to defective components in my Thinkpad.......... Hopefully i can wait another 3 years before i need to buy a new Thinkpad again and see whether the Nvidia GPU will hold out......

Different amounts of graphic memory though. That will be the distinguishing point in performance.

Well, if it is a 128-bit graphics card, the performance will only improve marginally with more than 256MB of memory. It seems CPU is now the main distinguishing point - the T410 has slower dual core processors with no HT, the T510 has fast dual core processors with some that have HT, and the W510 has quad core processors.

    EDIT:
I believe 14.1" screens can be 16:9 as well, which is what I think these are. It would make no sense to have half the T-series be 16:10 and half to be 16:9. I think the T410 will have a standard 1366x768 screen, with available 1600x900 screens.

Oops, you're right. 14.1" can be either 16:10 or 16:9. That means that very likely the T410 will also be 16:9. This is quite sad really.
Also, when I mention distinguishing performance, I mean graphic performance (which, as you said, won't vary that much). CPU will be the main deciding factor in overall performance, just like you said.

last time Erik said (i don't know whether he was joking) that the T410s use a 16:10 LCD rather than the 16:9 LCD, but only time will tell.

So will the switch to Arrandale reduce battery life or what? Assuming the T410 magically uses the same backlight technology as the T400.

Who knows? I read that it should improve battery life because of the integrated Mem controller and newer fab process.

Probably nvidia was more desperate to make that sell and were cheaper than ATI. Which, if true, wouldn't be all too reassuring for the quality...

I don't mind much about an Nvidia GPU but please, for the love of God don't give us this same quadro that we've had for the last 6 years in the 14.1in model. From what I can find online, the 3100 is a rebadged NVS 170m, which is a rebadged NVS 140m. Yay for progress (rolleyes)!

Damn what's up with you dudes and Nvidia? Nvidia rules, Quadro rules, yeah maybe sometimes there is a burnt laptop and other stuff, but cmon man having a dedicated graphics card or switchable graphics rule! I do agree that its time for a new nvidia graphics card, not a rebranded quadro card used for years! It seems like the only thing different will be the nvidia card and core i5 wow. But i am going to wait also for CES before i make a decision to get a Thinkpad or not. I think its time for a backlit keyboard, that thinklight isn't going to last much longer.

And ATI also makes discrete graphics cards... including the switchable GPUs in the current T-series and W500...

I would have liked to see ATI's Mobility Radeon 5xxx series in the new Thinkpads, but I guess that's wishful thinking

I'd rather have new 16:9 panels (ones starting at 1600x900) than 16:10 panels with an ancient manuf. date. It's not like current Thinkpads are famous for their high quality panels... I just hope the FHD option is not limited to the W510, because HD+ isn't enough for me and HD is a joke.

As for Nvidia: my last notebook was a total loss because of their manuf. screw-up, so yes: boo! :( I'm also not so happy with their Linux driver policy.

AFAIK some of those CPUs will have an integrated GPU, so maybe we'll still see switchable graphics?

Dell has already done the move in many of its range before Lenovo, and HP has already moved most of its non business laptop to the 16:9 format, so Business laptops will be the next one to have it in the upcoming revamp. It is quite hard to obtain high quality 16:10 monitors at enough quantity and good enough price..... so i wouldn't be holding your breath..

Last I check Dell's business range are still 16:10 and so is HP, well, I know sooner or later they'll all be 16:9. But at least not for awhile with the Business models.
I'm surprised Lenovo made the move first, they were the last to hang on to the 4:3 after everyone else had switched. Oh well.

I didn't say all of the latitude line have been moved to the 16:9 range ( Latitude Z has 16:9 inch if you have missed its release recently), but most of the other Dell lines have some sort of 16:9 inch screen formats, i.e. Adamo, Studio XPS.

Usually, Lenovo do a revamp around every two years +/- half year, and this time around it is Lenovo that will be the first to have a major revamp across its business laptop category. It will be implausible that Lenovo use 16:10 screen when there is not enough stock of them, and then change to 16:9 format mid-life, inorder to catch up with the competition whom release their entire line later than Lenovo, and all have 16:9 formats.

16:9, no ati GPU, and glossy are 3 things that make me VERY unhappy these days. I dont hate nvidia or glossy but for a everywhere use laptop glossy isn't good at all, the glossy on my dell vostro is OK since it sits in my office at home. As for nvidia I don't hate them, just would rather have an ATi card.

Ill just wait for the release to make any judgment.

lot of people just got burnt bad by Nvidia, since their entire line of 65 nm and 45 nm GPU is reportedly defective (but their information on these are sketchy, and they are not publicly admitting anything. They are also trying to confuse customers by passing on liability and giving out various information, which confuses people). This mean that many perfectly good T61/T61p and R61 laptops (which is a lot of laptops) may fail unexpectedly due to nvidia GPU, and warranty replacement if they do occur would only be a temporary fix.

The E6400 Latitude's nvidia gpu is also based on the 65 nm technology, and so is many other Dell laptops of that generation.......

No one is happy to own a ticking time bomb, especially when they have spent so much money on it........ not everyone changes laptop every year.. some people still use their 7 year old laptops....

This is the same attitude people have towards Microsoft Xbox with their RRoD problems....... or PS3 YLOD.....

As much as I don't like it, I would be willing to accept the transition to 16:9 if it brought much better screens to the T-series. And echoing the sentiments of everyone else, not Nvidia again....

HP's ProBook line (at least all the new models) are using 16:9 screens. The Dell Latitude Z and the new thin Vostro both use 16:9 screens. There's not too much that HP/Dell/Lenovo can do, really, except adapt to the new screen dimensions in the new models.

I believe that was due to the battery, which is a different issue.

Transfer it to a "W510d" without the d.
That's a 4:3 1024x768 (=XGA) Display with additional 342 Pixels on the right side. C'mon, XGA on a 15" Workstation laptop? Ridiculous, even for a low entry model.

    But I "hope" for 16:10. If not, I'm gonna buy a T400...
(Still losing some pixels from my current SXGA+)

As awful as it is, the base resolution in 4:3 days for most 14" and 15" machines was 1024x768. So the 1366x768 is in fact a step up over those days.

    HD Ready. Teens dream :)
Have no idea who needs this display type. It looks like everybody uses laptops as TV + embedded DVD/MPEG player. Sometimes it makes sense to do something real, work for example. It can happen next laptop can stay in dream :) It is just a trend, cows will be made sure by marketing they need only HD display. Usual story, trivial things. Not a dramma but it is pity there is no company who can follow own way and have own opinion.

i7 is another "not necessary" thing. Integrated graphics card is enough, dedicated (it doesn't matter either Nvidia or Ati) complicates laptop, making it silly :)

That's capitalism and capitlists don't do real work. They do it so they won't have any work to do. They do not worry about people who love computers. The bottom line in dollars is what counts.

Laptop got its name changed to Notebook because people were getting their legs burnt using laptops (probably the Pentium 4 version)... Dell and Mac laptop then had battery fires, which instigated the biggest battery recall across the globe by many laptop manufacturers (Thanks Sanyo and Sony for their extremely well made battery flash grenades, hate your in-laws well you should consider these old batteries as Christmas gifts to them)....

Lenovo Thinkpad batteries had special circuitry that monitors all the temperature and charging condition of battery cells, if anything suspicious is detected it will trigger the safety circuit, thus making the battery useless......... this also lead to problems of perfectly good battery become useless due to safety switch going off....

This is another reason you should stay away from third party batteries for the sake of saving a few dollars.

Will these systems use the new Series 3 docks? Just purchased one for my T400s and hope I don't need another when/if I pick one of these.
