I received my y460 last week and applied thermal paste as I normally do with a new laptop. I noticed that the heat sink on the ati chip does not sit flesh against the chip and the paste I removed was rather thick. Almost like a thermal pad in terms of thickness, but was defiantly thermal paste. I applied a thin layer of as5 and the computer kept shutting down. When I lifted the heatsink again I found that the heatsink was barely making contact, so I applied a thicker layer and finally my machine was booting again. I then began to run some stress tests and my temp rises to 90 degrees Celsius under full load.

My question is, Do i have a defect or is this normal for the y460?

You should be at least 10C below that mark. A few of us that overclock top out right around 80C.

no no 90 is fine under ful load. Your unit is perfectly normal. This unit as you know does not have two seperate cooling fans for both gpu and cpu. You have to also take into consideration if your not proping up your laptop the fan intake cant get alot of air in it and that rises temps by 10 degrees. Also if the room is hot to begin with from a heater that can also make a difference.

Many of the best laptops that have duel fans and have the best thermal design when pushed like the m17xr2 get to 90 celsius. If you do the things Iv suggest your temps will stay around 80 under full stressed and should hover below 70 most of the time.
