I`m considering buying a T43 with the following specifications .

CPU: Intel Centrino Mobile 1.86 GHz (new series of CPU Dothan Centrino)
Memory: 512MB DDR2 Extra Fast RAM
HDD: 60GB 7200RPM (very expensive drive)
    Display: XGA - ultra bright
Video card: ATI - 256MB (not cheap shared memory, perfect for gaming)
    DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
LAN Network Card: 1000mbps / 1 full gbps
    Wireless Network Card 54 b/g
Modem for dial-up internet access integrated
Biometric Fingerprint Scanner - security feature
    Touchpad and Stick pointing devices
    Built-in recovery system
    XP Pro with all updates

I need a laptop to carry with me on trips .I watch many movies and TV recordings . I plan to use it as my home computer .I will get the docking station to use my 19 inch home monitor .

Is this a good enough computer ? Is the wireless card good enough ? will I need to upgrade it ? Should I save more cash and buy a duo processor ?Will I need to get more RAM for this computer ?

    Any comments or suggestions ?

T43 is a fine computer, especially if you get it for a discount. I guess you're getting one with those specs for no more than $1000 ? (that one currently sells for Cdn $1100 new, with SXGA)

I dont think there is an "ultra bright" XGA screen on T43... they're all 150 nits i think. It wont be the best for watching your "many movies".

You dont HAVE to get a docking station to use an external monitor. Use the AccessIBM Thinkpad utitlities (presentation manager) to setup use of your SXGA monitor (which you can easily flip to with Function-F7)

As for the wireless, what card is that? The thinkpad card (which is atheros) is much better than the intel 2945 or whatever. But both will be ok.

As for core duo, i have that and i think it's overhyped. Most ppl dont need it.

The value will depend on the price.
