Got my first laptop, R61i 8932-9xu a couple weeks ago.

I have noticed this happen a few times now...........

When I leave the computer for a few hours with internet explorer running, I've returned to find that I have to reenter my Windows password because I'm locked out. When I do this, the internet page that I left from resumes on the screen, but there is no wireless connection and I can go nowhere. I can close the internet explorer, but cannot open the task manager, restart or shutdown the computer, or use my wireless mouse. Nothing seems to respond. The navigation pad works though. Also, when I go to Access Connections, click Find WLAN, I get a Windows Error popup that says "application failed to initiate properly (0xc0000017) Click OK to terminate the application" I click OK and it asks me if I want to turn on the wireless radio, and clicking YES does nothing to the wireless radio status.
To escape I have to turn off the computer with the power button, turn it back on and then everything is fine.
I have Windows XP Pro, I have not performed a clean install, however, I did remove a minor amount of bloatware (Symantec crap, etc) Since I'm not a guru and don't know what some of the programs do, I left most intact.

    Am I missing something here?

How much RAM do you have, jpcdmd. And how much virtual memory are you allocating?

Go to System Properties in Control Panel and click the Advanced tab. Select Settings under the Performance category. Click over to the Advanced tab again. Virtual Memory is that last category.

I think something is eating up your RAM because that error is RAM related. Do you have any RAM intensive third party applications?

The only thing I've put onto the computer that it didn't come with is the Logitech software for my wireless mouse.
This sucks, I only really use this thing for internet browsing and every time I walk away with the internet up I come back and have to manually shut it down to use it again.

I did notice that when I restarted the computer, before reaching the windows desktop, it read "one of the disks needs to be checked for consistency, CHKDSK is verifying files.........

Then an error prompt pops up from Diskeeper that says "Unable to load resource DLL" I have only seen that prompt once though.

I downloaded the newest driver from intel dated 11/05/2007

Never had to download new drivers, so after the download, I doubleclicked on the installation file and ran it, said they installed. Do I have to do anything with any of the other files that downloaded also?

control panel/my Documents/Disk/XP/drivers/x32/DPInst32 Driver Package Installer

is that all I need to do?

    thanks for your help guys

I guess I don't. I'm not a computer idiot, but I guess I need some direction on just doing a driver update so I don't download a bunch of crap I don't need. Or at least how do I check the date on my current driver?

Lately, I'm noticing that internet pages are sometimes taking a VERY long time to load, or not loading at all (getting the "Internet Explorer page not available" screen.) I check the connection and it is still connected, and if I go back a page and reload, it works fine. Getting annoying. My old desktop from 2001 with a P3 chip is almost faster and more efficient for surfing the net than this laptop right now.
