    Hi all,

I was wondering if the noisy fan and heat has been improved with the recently built T43s. Are they as quiet and cool as T42s?

There are some who believe that some of the newer T43s are quieter.

I doubt they'll ever be "as cool", because the CPUs consume more energy - that's a fact. But they might be "as quiet". In any case, the Thinkpad fan control utility seems to help most people.

My T43 was built in November, and was DEFINITELY not quiet without the fan control utility. It was reasonably cool, however, CPU staying at appx. 38 degrees celsius.

With the utility installed, it is dead quiet with the fan always off. Temperature is hovering around 47 degrees celsius, which should be far from critical for any of the components.

Hi thanks for the info. Doesn't 47 C feel pretty hot? How does one install the fan utility? Is it possible to set it up so that the fan is still on but less frequently?

Head over to the thinkpads.com forum and you'll be able to find out everything you need to know about the Fan Control Utility.

It allows you to set different fan levels for different temperature thresholds (although only for the highest temperature being reported - always the PCI card/southbridge in my laptop).

The only real downside to having the fan off that I've found is that the bottom of the laptop directly under the touchpad gets very hot, which can be uncomfortable.

47oC is amazing! My 14.1" 2.0Ghz T43 runs at around 49oC when not plugged in on "Power Source Optimized" power setting. But I havent undervolted or underclocked anything. When plugged in expect around 52oC, around 58-60oC if you are watching a movie. As long as the heat is under 54oC I don't notice the heat.

[edit] And I am running the fan utility, so noise is fine. [/edit]
