Havent really been keeping up with the specs on the upcoming models. Which one would most likely be the new workstation? Or would an actual workstation move be coming out in acouple months?

The thinkpad W500 will eventually replace the t61p, i'm not sure when it'll come out though.

I think only the lower end t400/t500's are coming out on the 5th, not 100% sure though.

Given the current low price of the T61P's and the projected high price of the W500 along with the small performance increase I went with the T61P.

The FireGL V5700 doesn't do much in term of performance compared to the T61p. It's the reason why I went ahead and bought the HP 8710w.

HP 8710w is in a different category (17'') and is not compared to the Thinkpad T61p by any mean. It came out last year so no new chipset here accept for the Penryn CPU. However, the Quadro 1600m is more powerful than the Quadro 570m.
It has superior build quality just like the thinkpad, with more features and stuff, good screen too.
