Bought one of these to go with my T30.
Unit is plastic molding but has the "carbon" coating.

I benchmarked it against another cheap import usb 2.0 enclosure and it was
about 1.5 times faster. There is definitely a difference in quality in the interface. Probably the amount of buffering.

When I ordered it a few weeks ago it was $20, price is now $26. But I am sure that is much less than IBM wanted originally.

I don't see how an eclosure will increase performance.

Keep in mind that this enclosure works with PATA 2.5" drives, not the current SATA 2.5" models.

The board inside the enclosure that converts ide to usb is better in the IBM unit than in the other enclosure that I tested.

As for this not working with SATA, no big deal. IDE drives are best suited for a external USB enclosure and are still availible (and might even be more cost effective in some cases).

I understand, just pointed it out so that somebody with a SATA drive doesn't order one.
