Hi I'm considering the Y580 as my next laptop, though it looks like there's no 1080p option on the US lenovo site. Am I missing something or is 1080p not available for the Y580.

You are absolutely correct. Check out the Y500.

Thanks, however I was leaning towards the Y580 because of optimus and the 660m (vs 650m/750m on Y500). Has 1080p ever been an option for the Y580 or is it just temporarily out of stock?

Optimus is overrated. There are discussions about Optimus everyday since I've joined. If you really are going to hold out on a laptop because of Optimus, then you're wasting your time.
I don't remember seeing 1080p ever on the Y580.
What is wrong with the 750M SLI? It was rated higher than the GTX660M ... -
Don't be in a hurry. Just wait a little while or speak to a sale rep via chat line. Definitely get the Y500, since you get the SLi option for future, in case you do not want it now. It doesn't make much difference in battery between optimus and full use of the GPU. The 750M downclocks very low and unless you use any heavy 3D stuff (which will also be the same situation for optimus), it does not rise the clocks. That helps a lot with the battery. I get about 4 hours with the Y400 which is more than enough. If it had optimus, probably we would have got about 30 min to 45 min more, but that doesn't bother me at all.
+ Y580 had a lot of issues, including heating problems. So yeah, wait for the 1080p to come up again and also try with a rep. you may be lucky to get it from them. -
