I'm clean installing the 64bit version of WinXP Pro on my new T61p, but none of the "XP" drivers on Lenovo's site will work. The site specifies 32/64bit for vista, but there is no 64bit category for XP. Its a real problem because for example nvidia doesn't provide display drivers for notebooks, so I have to get them from lenovo. (except they don't work with xp64). this is also the case with all the other drivers, audio, network, etc. Any ideas anyone??

Some 32-bit drivers may work on a 64-bit install, but the best suggestion I can give you (which doesn't answer your question) is to use 32-bit Windows with 32-bit drivers.
There isn't a need to get onto x64 unless you have special needs... -
its a real dilemma, since I would prefer a 64bit OS for intensive graphic editing and 3d visualization. 32bit XP only supports 3gb ram also, which is not enough. I got Vista x64 with my T61p, but it performs terribly. I've read that vista drops performance of apps like Maya and 3DsMax, and photoshop is dreadfully slow - its completely unusable to me(and I have 4gb ram too!).
Sigh, I guess there is just no support for 64bit XP...so should I choose 32bit XP or 64bit Vista? -
But I will say that it's really worth having the x64 Vista since I get all my 4GB of memory. For what I do (numerical analysis) it really helps to have all the memory you can get. -
I have the exact same sound problem with my t61p on xp x64. I got 4gb of ram and it is either wasted by xp 32 because 32 only supports 3gb, or by vista. i have tried a million differnt drivers, but i cannot get sound working. I installed the bluetooth driver ment for vista64 on xp 64 and it works just fine. I am not sure why this works, because it is the only driver that works that way. Does anyone know if there is a compatibility layer that can be used to run vista drivers on xp or (like NDISwrapper for linux) run 32bit drivers on a 64bit arch? Furthermore, the sound driver i need for the t61p( soundmax high definition audio ) doesnt need to be installed on vista. Is this part of vista's new hardware abstraction layer common library or what.

They have XP-64 Drivers that may work. They are Geforce drivers, but you may not be loosing much.

The drivers use a custom .inf for the 570m.
[The Geforce/Quadro thing is a marketing thing. The Quadro 570 is a basically a Geforce 8600m with DD3 memory.] -
Man, this sucks I'm actually starting to need 64 bits but I don't want to switch to vista. Besides I wanted to do a custom nlite install and it doesn't work with vista.
Sucks to be me -
I have same problem - need XP x64 since i work with CAD/CAM applications. I have some luck so far with drivers though, the majority i need work, but not all
. I'll start new thread with links to drivers and what i did to get it up
.

It's not necessarily Lenovo/IBMs fault on the drivers. Win XP-64 came out when Longhorn was originally supposed to come out so most companies decided to wait and make drivers for that. Of course, Longhorn got delayed, etc, Vista came out and thus a very minimum amount of drivers and applications were made for XP-64.
