as a once patient thinkpad fan there doesnt seem much reason to wait anylonger. No lenovo 4th of july sale and the dell 830 seems like a better unit.
patience lost. oh right the key board. isnt dells keyboard just as sweet?

I think there is a Dell section here somewhere........

And no...Dell keyboard feels nothing like a keyboard....plastic pieces hanging for dear life is what they feel like....

Personally, I prefer ThinkPad keyboards to Dell keyboards. However, Dell notebooks are really nice too, and recently, they've gotten better.

If I were to buy a new notebook today, I would buy a D630 over a T61. Then again, I've lost an interest in ThinkPad notebooks ever since Lenovo started making them so...

Well I have T60, T61, Dell Inspiron 8200, 700m, 1505 here right now. Keyboard on 8200 may be the worst, but I can not tell the difference among T60, T61, 700m, and 1505.

its the only thing between me and my new t61p.
oh yeah, there is no t61p !
    NO SALE EITHER.

I have a 1505 that I bought on one of the discount deals to use in the kitchen. The keyboard does not feel the same. You will notice that it makes a lot more noise in quiet classrooms too as I am annoyed by inconsiderate idiots blasting away on their keyboards.

BTW, there is a July 4th sale.....people are only complaining the amount isn't what they wanted.

I think we know what the "Dell 830" refers to.....the real question is, why are you here? We are here, because we are talking about Lenovo units. Go discuss your Dell in another section.

Go for it. That way, once your notebook comes, the T61 will finally go on sale. (The universe is always out to get each and everyone of us ^_^)

If memory serves me correctly, the winter sales are pretty good. ($1200 starting for a 14" T60p with a T7400 back then)

no specific link offered. however, dilligent research shows the two comparable. was waiting for the t61p 4th of july sale and would have been good. now its getting close to crunch time and no @$^%& t61p and i need a computer. the only alternative is the d830. benefits of the dell are US support, 3 year warranty, OS(64bit disc) and peace of mind i will have it in a month. i am pissed. i have waited too long. i need to get used to this machine before i have to rely on it daily.

i think solid gun could use a little yogurt splashed acrost her avatar.

    or is it HIS avater.

I think the D830 is a better value, but the T61 is more durable and has a better keyboard. Overall, I think the D830's durability and keyboard are good enough. So I chose the D630 over the T61 and I would choose the D830 over the 15.4" T61.

    that's funny lol

Actually I usually say wait for the back to school sale. That's typically the good one (for other manufacturers too). Problem is tho, with the big shipping delays, you might not get a t6 in time for "back to school", lol

I seriously don't get it. How low do you need the price to go? I just made a dell inspiron 1520 to the specs of my recently ordered T61. It costs nearly 100 more. Then I configured a D830 and it was $30 more. Why are you bashing the price of the cheapest "business class" notebook on the market?

I'm also seriously wondering: Why would anyone would buy a D830/D630 over the T61? What does the D830/D630 have over the T61? It's not price. It's definitely not looks. It's definitely not weight and size. I don't recall anyone thinking that dell has superb build quality. I don't get it, what is it? There are only two valid reasons that is shipping delays, and graphics card. Those however are somewhat petty and will change on july 10-11. The time to ship for my T61 isn't outrageous. It's 3 weeks from when I bought it.

I'm really sick of all of the people threatening to buy dells but never say why. Just "hey lenovo you better catch up or I'm going to buy a dell!". Ya... right...

I bought a D630 for cheaper than a similar T61 and I just configured a D830 for cheaper than a similar T61 15.4". It depends on which options you want. For me, the D630 was much cheaper, by about $200.

I guess to some extent it does. Lenovo overcharges more than dell on their upgrades however Lenovo is cheaper if you want to put in your own RAM and HDD. I was also configuring 15.4".

LOL the vices of being young and having to listen to parents. I'm so glad I'm past that.

I've configured D830, D630, T61 on a couple of occasions, and every time the T61 comes out cheaper.

Lenovo's upgrade options are actually cheaper than Dell's.

I think both companies are guilty of over charging for extras, especially ram. It is a problem because Dell tends to have low starting costs. The base D630 price is $849 and the base D830 price is $899. I could have saved money by buying my ram through Newegg or upgrade the ram for the same price. But I do now know how to change laptop ram and I do not want to experiment on my laptop.

I mentioned it before, it depends on which upgrades the customer wants.

Hey Homer, it's actually pretty easy. Download the service manual for your laptop and it should give you step by step graphical guides on how to open up the laptop and change out the RAM. You probably just need a philips screw driver.

A 2GB module (1x2GB) only costs about $100 right now. So it's dirt cheap if you upgrade the RAM yourself.

Well, Dell does charge more taxes than Lenovo. Double the tax in the same state. Also, I wonder how the T61 will compare to the new dell vostros that will come out Tuesday. The only info I have seem on Vostros is through this link: http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=459840

Double tax? I am not even sure if that is legal. Why would the state of Virginia a want to double tax Dell, but not Lenovo?

Thank you for the advice, but I prefer to pay the extra $100 for someone else to install my ram for me. I am going to install my own ram for my next desktop though. Installing ram into a desktop is a piece of cake.

Actually, I was on the Dell thread and saw a post of someone doing a RAM upgrade. OMG, on a Dell it's not that simple. They installed one stick pretty easily from the back, but then they had to completely uninstall/remove the keyboard on the front to get to the other stick.

I don't think the T61 is like that... is it? It wouldn't stop me anyway, but it looked a little insane on that Dell.

    EDIT: Have a look!! http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=130014

I picked up 2 x 1GB for $70. I think Lenovo charges something like $165. That's not even from nothing, that's just to upgrade from 512MB. Who are they trying to be, Apple? You also get a lifetime warranty if you buy it yourself whereas (I'm not sure but) I think your RAM is only covered under your Lenovo warranty if you buy through Lenovo. Ridiculous gouging. It's crazy when people ***** out gouging for other things but not for laptop upgrades which are ridiculously overpriced.

My ASUS has something like that. There's easy access to one slot and the other is buried deep in the mobo somewhere. I think in the T61 both slots are located intelligently in the front so you only have to take off the front panel.

And it's not like Lenovo spent heaps on R&D. They don't NEED all of that money. But I guess when you're in an IT department buying for a corporation, who cares it's the corporations money!

Yeah, at the time when I configured my T60p order, I chickened out of doing the RAM upgrade myself, and I almost configured my T60p with a 4GB option. But at over $800, I finally backed down and went with 3GB. A 3GB upgrade still cost me $400. Had I done the upgrade myself, 3GB would probably only cost me half as much.

But I have heard some incompatibility stories with after market RAM though. Oh well.

Just take a look at how much Dell is charging for RAM!

Lenovo is charging peanuts compared to what Dell is charging.

yes. the older Ts were like that. Not sure if this is the case with all the new thinkpads but in mine, under the palm rest there are two Ram slots, both filled with 512MB Ram =1GB Ram. That really bugs me if i want to upgrade my ram, i have to replace one or both slots!

No Dell can compare to that.
