Nope, I don't like numpad because it off centers keyboard too much (on laptop and desktop) - and on desktop it makes hand too far from the mouse.

It *might* be a little cramped on 15.6" to incoporate a full sized numpad, i think ideally if they had a fn+ combination set for a numpad I'd be happy.

I think you should try the HP 15.6 numpad laptops. Its not cramped at all. But I do see how it puts things a little off center, but then again that doesnt bother me as I have a 17in that does this and I prefer it this way.

Nope. Very happy with this decision. It keeps the keyboard centered below the screen.

considering how much people reacted to the Lenovo Thinkpad off centered screen (only by a one cm at the most, while the keyboard + numpad will induce offcentering in the 5 to 7 cm scale). I don't think Lenovo wants to risk another backlash from its consumers....

Then get that HP. What you want here on the TP is not very considerate given the TP keyboard's size. 15.6 isn't that much wider than 15.4.

Those that do complain have to realize that they are on a machine and that the assymetry has a purpose.

I never use the numpad (even my external keyboard for my T500 at my desk doesn't have one), so not disappointed at all. I dislike how the numpad pushes the keyboard to one side - I like my keyboard in the middle of the screen.

Anybody still using numpads?? I thought they just put them on 15.6" models in order not to have one inch of plastic on both sides of the keyboard (makes the laptop look big and crappy).

People who input lots of numbers use number pads. I for one have almost written off the W510 after seeing the specs for the upcoming HP 8540w and I still have to wait for the Dell M4500 to make my final decision. Still, price is a factor and if Lenovo is offering coupons by the time Dell and HP have their machines up for ordering, then the W510 stands a chance (assuming that the NVS GPU thing is a typo or a re-badge of the FX880).

There is plenty of space for one. Have you seen the space to the left and right of the keyboard?

I still use them quite often. I prefer them when entering numbers over the row above the qwerty.

The 8540w is the HP I found the other day and was surprised at. I love how HP is taking advantage of the space rather then having a fancy grill or nothing at all. Granted I am more of a thinkpad/dell business guy, that HP is really tempting as it has not only a ful sized keyboard, trackpoint, and the highest resolution screen offered; but also has the option for a quad core i7. Pretty sweet package if you ask me. But if given the choice Id rather have these features in a dell or thinkpad.

I tried that, and for when I am mobile I use it. But they are a pita sometimes. It is much nicer to have one already built in rather then having to plug one in all the time and have it move around the dek when using it. Not to mention the usb ones never have the same tactile feel as the laptop they plug into.

there is little you can do about that now, since the machine has went in full production, but if enough people support numpad on the next generation machine, then Lenovo can always do it (if it engineering feasible and not affecting other attributes like size of keyboards, etc) like on many other fixes like FN-Ctrl switch, symmetrical screen, keyboard support, etc. Personally i like it the way it is.

Ugh. I hope not. The off-centered-ness of the keyboard is quite annoying on 15.6" or 16" machines with a numpad. It's better on 17" laptops, since they have more room overall.

Whether you need it or not, it's always good to have a choice. And my feeling is that it's getting more and more difficult to find 15.x" without numpad. So I appreciate that lenovo's current 15" line doesn't have them. (Yet?)
