I stopped getting sound from my T400 speakers.

I have tried uninstalling the drivers, and re-installing them. (Conexant Drivers) But I'm still getting no sound.

I also have the K-Lite media codecs installed.

    Headphones work.

The speakers do not, not even the high pitched battery warning or plug in/out which I thought came from somewhere else.

    The sound is not muted.

    Any suggestions?

    Problem Solved.

Everything is fine in the device manager (sound).

(unknown device + unknown modem device on high definition audio bus...)

No sound in the Linux environment either.

OK, I solved the problem, close thread.

I hit the on/off button in the top left and didn't notice at some point. The system sound was muted but I don't get the green indicator since I wiped the original Vista Business & the Vista Thinkpad Sofware off of the notebook.

    Q. How do I get the green sound/system hotkey indicator back?

    A. Install the hotkey utility. The model number and type can be found on the Lenovo page. (my t400 type was: 43R2 and model: 472) Found by googling 't400 model type and model'.

Can you please give more details how you solved this problem? I'm have the same problem with my T400s. The original Thinkpad software on my T400s is installed and I have a mute LED indicator on the mute button above the keyboard - so I'm pretty sure that the sound is not muted. Headphones/external speakers work fine.
And one thing that I can't understand is how the sound mute in Vista is connected with the sound in Linux? I don't get any output from the laptop's speakers in Ubuntu as well.

UPDATE: somehow I lost my volume/mute screen indicator in Vista..

I had the same problem in my T400. While the m/c is not really ancient (bought Nov 2008), I did not have any warranty on it. Since the speakers were not working in both XP and Ubuntu, I decided it was a hardware problem and ordered a speaker from Lenovo. The part no is 39T7483 - and it costs $6.93. (the shipping was overnight and was $13). Although Lenovo support ( Lenovo Support & downloads - System service parts - ThinkPad R400 and T400) says that the part is not "user replaceable" it was not very hard to change it.
You basically have to take off the palmrest, the keyboard and the speaker bezel to get to the speakers. Take off the old one and plug in the new speakers and route the wires along the cable guides. Took me 40 mins to replace & here's the guide

The new speakers work as expected.

I had taken the laptop to Europe and don't know if it was some voltage spike on their 220 volt supply that did the damage or not (seems really unlikely) but I am kind of miffed that a Tank-400 can have its speakers damaged after 1.5 years of very careful use.
