Hi All,
I have a Lenovo 3000 N200 notebook. The fan is really annoying me. I noticed that some reviews have had the same comments about the fan being too loud and ramping up to full speed at even small loads. So, I was wondering if anyone has a solution for replacing the fan with something more silent. I have only ever looked at cooling desktop PCs so I have no idea what you can do with a laptop. Are there heatsinks or slower spining fans. Maybe thermal greese. I don't think my laptop runs very hot since i never notice heat coming from it. Anyway, any suggestions would be appreaciated.

I have the same issue. Would appreciate any feedback from others.
thanks,

Make sure all your vents are clean of any dust and also look into buying a cooling pad -
try downloading tpfancontrol, it might work for your model.

tdubya, since your model is N200 this is very recent 2007 model and is certainly within warranty period.
The most appropriate and most authoritative solution is to bring it back to the service centre to have it checked by a competent technician. Nothing is more conclusive and re-assuring than this.
Your warranty covers labour charge and manufacturing material defects with the period covered. Good chance is that you will pay nothing, other than your transport.
Stop listerning to hear-say about what may be causing the noise. Get it checked by Lenovo and its final and conclusive --- nothing beats this sense of re-assurance for your peace of mind.

Now if its overheating then yah thats a reason to return it. So yes you should more into this problem and like I suggested, you might even be able to control the fans. -
bwhxeon, please mind your own business.
My message was never attentioned to you.
tdubya is mature enough to judge whether or not to take any advice. There's no need for a 3rd party to comment on another's comment.
Hope you understand.

Yeah, button it bwhxeon, and heed the noble advice attentioned here to bring the sick lappy to "the service center to have it checked by a competent technician" because as every right thinking person intuitively knows, only at such centers of technical excellence can the OP's malaprop ever hope to be righted.
edit:
bwhxeon, I was in agreement with you - alas, sarcasm rarely seems to work as intended, but such is life! -
tdubya I guarantee if you listen to these two you will be on here again posting about how lenovo either wont fix it or said they fixed it and it still sounds wrong to you. The fans on the systems do get a little on the noisy side, but thats how they all are. Lenovo will tell you its within their standard specs and there isn't anyway around this unless their is something ACTUALLY WRONG. If your still under the 21 day guarantee then you might be able to send it back, but probably not for a complete refund.

Hi all,
My fan on the N200 is so loud that I can hear it from other rooms when I'm not in the same room. It will run when the CPU is running at 4%. I'm really tempted to just sell the laptop for a loss and recover what I can and buy another laptop. It seems like this started happening after I upgraded my RAM from 1GB to 3GB. I'm fairly non-technical, but do you think that could happen? Did I loosen something in the case and it's causing the fan to be loose or loud? My brother says the noise is not just the fan running, but the loud motor of the running fan. I can hear the fan spin up and then slowly spin down, every oh, one minute or so.
i've downloaded the tpfancontrol and all of the warnings made me too weary to try that route...
thanks. -

Memory generates heat. You also probably just need another fan. If it makes noise like that its going bad. It happens. Dont try to fix it yourself and take the blame.

Just wanted to update anyone else with a noisy N200 fan. Since I purchased my laptop in Sep'07 and it was still in warranty, I called Lenovo support and opened a service ticket for the noisy fan. The customer service tech told me to send it in. The DHL box for returning the laptop arrived the next day. I sent it back on a Monday and got my laptop back by Thursday.
The fan noise is much much quieter!! And the process was a lot shorter than I expected. I'm a happy customer. Just wanted to share my good experience with Lenovo service.
On a side note, based on the paper work that came back with the laptop, it looks like all they did was update my BIOS, they didn't change out the fan.
Happy New Years! -
Haha, thanks for sharing. Some of the strangest issues can be solved with an update...

Could you somehow get me a copy of that BIOS UPDATE, either by re-replying to that service tread at Lenovo or by making a copy of the current BIOS you're running?
Also.. Are you having a...
Product: 3000 N200 0769-BHG
Operating system: Windows XP
Original description:
Celeron M 530(1.73GHz), 512MB RAM, 120GB 5400rpm HD, 15.4in 1280x800 LCD, Intel X3100, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth, Modem, 10/100 Ethernet, Touchpad, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 6c Li-Ion, WinVista Home Basic
Thus you may have added more RAM and changed to WindowsXP
anyhow... if you have a computer with those specs, and a BIOS that makes your computer silent!
Would you please be able to give me a copy??
PS: also check your C: for one or more folders with names like this...
C:\Drivers\Win\FLASH\68af03us
You may have two folders in your FLASH folder, if you do, would it be possible for you to ZIP those two folders and send them to me?
I can provide you with a space to upload them easy, if you have them! Also whatever your service-paper says, would be helpful to me when talking to lenovo using "submit a request" on their page (I cannot affort the pay-help they offer)
Would some of this be possible for you, or others that have recieved an BIOS update that silenced their Lenovo N200 0769-BHGAttached Files:

My machine is an "Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-BHG"
yesterday, in another forum, norwegian forum, i got my hands on something
the guys at Lenovo posts BIOS ver 1.02 as the newest, while there is an
2.03 version installed in the 2007models of this pc.
And thus, if you download the BIOS update and install it, you really downgrade your pc, instead of upgrading it...
So, inorder for you guys whom has a pc like mine...(see above)
Get the BIOS: 68ET31WW (v2.03) here...
--> http://www.alexdata.com/FORUMPOST/BIOS-FLASH.ZIP <--
This is the standard downloadable BIOS FLASH PACKAGE that you can download in version 1.02 from Lenovo.com
I've added version 2.03 to this package and a HOW-TO.TXT
Explains how to upgrade to 2.03 (easy, 2 clicks)
and how to downgrade to 1.02 if that works better for you.. (5-10 clicks)
This is for "Lenovo 3000 N200 0769-BHG" machines ONLY !!!
(Not tested on different systems, and SHOULD NOT BE TESTED on DIFFERENT Lenovo systems!)
Also.. REIAH answered me yesterday, but he had a slightly different setup, different CPU and so on... so no go on his update.. Thanks for letting me know REIAH....!!
