My T61 (14.1in) is making a very low volume noise when on batteries. It is like a high-pitch whistling and comes from the left part of the laptop (network card?). If I plug in the adapter the noise immediately disappears. Does anyone else have this issue? Thanks.

Sounds similar to what is described here. CPU whine, perhaps.

my x60 has it, my compaq v6000t has it as well. something to do with voltage regulation and the processor i believe. from what i last read, its quite a common occurance throughout most brands  but dont quote me.

It is the CPU, most laptops have this and it is common. There are things that can be done to lessen it if you search around, but really it is just something you have to live with being on a laptop with a newer higher processing power processor.
