    Hi,

    how loud are 7200rpm drives compared to 5400rpm drives, e.g. T42 with 5400rpm vs. X200s with 5400rpm vs. X200s with 7200rpm?

    Thanks.

There is a very small difference, but it isn't really noticeable.

From my experience, its still noticeable if your in a silent room but if your like somewhere in the cafe or noisy area, you won't be able to hear it.

I don't own a 7,200 HD but my friend does.

It will depend on the brand, but my hitachi 7200rpm 100gb is pretty silent (I think 7k200 series)

My Seagate Momentus 7200rpm drive is extremely quite—the only time I ever hear it is in the very quietest of rooms. Like what mullenbooger said, it would seem the noise of the HD is more dependent on the manufacturer than its speed.

I have yet to hear any noise from my hitachi 7200rpm 100gb.

I have a 160gb 7200rpm drive and I don't notice it at all... the system fan is louder than the drive. And on the T61's even that is quiet.

I second that. If you get a good 7200rpm drive -- say, from Seagate -- you won't notice the difference in sound level at all.

the Seagate 7200rpm drive that i got is marginally noisier than the original fujitsu 5400rpm drive that came with the laptop. Having said that, it's only noticeable in a very quiet environment.

    Hope this helps.
