My lovely T61 started acting up yesterday. The fan is making a very loud noise and sounds like it is about to die. I have tried to compress air and cleaned the two side vents and all around the laptop but it is still the same.
I am out of the warranty period and do not want to send it in.
I have searched on eBay and notice some various fans on sale for the T61.
I wonder if it would be difficult to change the fan.
My question is:
A) Where can I find a Lenovo - service document/pdf for taking apart (disassemble) the external case of my T61? Would like to clean it up. Also changing the fan if possible.
2) Anyone have a solution on fixing the fan noise? or have replaced the fan themselves?
Thanks

It's pretty easy to replace the fan. You just need to keep track of where to removed which kind of screw so you can get everything back together properly. A replacement fan unit shouldn't run you more than 39 bucks.
Once your fan is replaced, there is a very nice solution to reduce fan noise in general, check out tpfc.mywo.org for details

Is this about a CPU Fan or what type of fan?

Yes i was able to find Lenovo Support that have videos on disassembling the T61. I also found a fan on eBay. So I will do that.
Thanks for the link to your site. Quite interesting and I will look into it once I complete fan replacement. Thanks -
Huge fan that is on the left side of the laptop near the double cooling vents.

The link to the HMM is in this forum's ThinkPad Sticky

How vulnerable is the fan (any way to reduce the chance of its failure?)? How long have you bought your T61, now that it's going to fail?
Noisy fan - T61
