I was going to do an 80GB hardrive 5400 rpm and then do an upgrade to the aftermarket 200GB 7200rpm Hitachi drive. My question is, If I do this do I lose the active hardrive protection that Thinkpads have(i.e stops the drive in case of fall)? Do only Lenovo drives have active protection?

I don't think you will lose that feature; I believe it's more of a sftware feature than an HDD one. You just need to reinstall the ThinkVantage Active Protection System to restore that feature.

The Active Protection System is a function of the ThinkPad itself--not the hard drive. IOW the APS accelerometer sensor that detects the laptop's spatial orientation and whether or not it's falling is part of the motherboard.
That said a few other laptop brands also have a built-in accelerometer sensor, one example being Apple's MacBook Pro. -
wasnt there some kind of program for the macbook pro that used the accelerometer and would do something depending on which side you smacked or tilted, sorry i cant remember exactly what it was.

Non-Lenovo hard drives work fine, I use them. Active protection still works.

I see that there is an official IBM way to do this in linux, but is there any way that this can be achieved in windows xp?
Non Lenovo harddrive - Bad Idea?
