    What is normal battery ware?

For example. My 6 cells battery for a Thinkpad X300 (42T4522) is 1 year and 1 month old with 397 cycles. First I was able to get about 4 hours (no wifi, etc..), but now just 2 hours and 50 minutes (same circumstances).

The 6 Cell battery in my T61 is about 2 1/2 years old. It's been though 2,642 power on cycles, and I still manage to get about 1.5 hours out of the battery (with screen brightness set to 1/2, WIFI ON, and searching the internet).
When it was new I got about 2-2.5 hours on a fully charged battery. Not too shabby if you ask me !

That battery is doing pretty good if you ask me. I could barely get 40 minutes on a 4cell after a year and a half

I think it is better to also report which battery cells maker you got in the battery. i.e. Panasonic, Sony and Sanyo.... from my experience with over 1000 lenovo Thinkpad batteries over the years, the Sanyo batteries fare the worst in terms of durability. And Panasonic is the best.

    what do you mean "unplugged"?

as in battery unplugged or charger unplugged?

and how did you managed to have experience with 1000 lenovo batteries? Did you like build an electric car or something with thinkpad batteries?

    as in charger unplugged.

Given that i have around 50 Thinkpad batteries of various kind (mostly the current models), 1000 batteries is not a lot. My friend sells laptops as a side business and he constantly consults me regarding battery problems. He also sold second hand used batteries to people (but he stops now due to the fact that he always get the Sanyo celled batteries).

Hence this is also why i ask about the makes and models of batteries when people talk about faulty batteries.

Most Thinkpads that is recently shipped (at least in Australia) comes with Sanyo batteries, it has become the standard nowadays (just like Chicony Keyboards). There is nothing you can do about that.

So it seems that a loss of about 25 to 30% is not abnormal over time. The technology still has to improve I guess.

I wasn't able to determine the manufacturer of the cells. How can I determine that?

Go to Power manager (if you have installed it, that is). Select the "Advanced" View (top right corner of Power Manager). Select "Battery" tab. Scroll down till you find the name - will be either Panasonic, Sanyo or Sony as lead_org mentioned.

If you don't have Power Manager, shut your computer down, Flip it over, take out the battery. The manufacturer's name will be on there someplace. Take a look!

the price of the batteries are a total rip off, worse then the price of toners. $150 for a cheap- piece of plastic made by cheap labour? capitalism at it's best.

you can charge that when you own your own company, you could also say that the pay that the Macquarie bank's staffs is too high, my friend works at the mails room as a clerk gets 35 dollars (when he started the job at 18 he got 25 dollars, which was much higher than what people got at that age at the fast food restaurants and supermarkets).

Accessories for laptops and cars are always expensive, due to the fact that they are not compatible with competitor's products. So they have a near monopoly on these products. For example Toyota derive something like 20 to 30% in Australia from selling accessories and options on their Toyota cars.

Obviously compatible products (aka generics) have taken some sales away from these accessories, but quality control on the generics are sometimes quite poor and lot of people whom got burnt once or twice would probably avoid the generics.

well you're comparing to restaurant workers... my first job when I was 18 was at Villawood detention centre, I got $23 per hour and all I had to do is play ping pong, play watch movies and sleep if it's a night shift, all meals were free and cooked by detainees themselves. It depends on which organisation you work for and how much bullcrap you can talk at the interview.

Wait! Are you saying that the name of the manufacturer is NOT on the battery? That's quite odd. You are using a genuine battery from Lenovo right?

The manufacturer of the cells is nowhere to be found on the battery. There is only 'Lenovo'. I bought my laptop new by a reliable reseller, with this battery in it.

I am quite sure it will have the name of the manufacturer of the battery somewhere on the battery. Maybe in small print. But it should be there.

My T500's battery, which came with my laptop direct from Lenovo, does not have the battery manufacturer on the battery casing. The manufacturer can be found by opening Power Manager, going to the Battery tab, and scrolling down to "Manufacturer name." Mine says "SANYO."

I have had many ThinkPads over the years and have had both Sanyo and Panasonic cells in mine. I will second that the Panasonic seem to hold up better. My latest ThinkPad has a cell manufacturer that I have never seen before, LGC 11. I assume that is some company under LG? Does anyone know who they are or how their cells hold up?

A T400 that passed through my hands had an LGC battery. No '11' at the end though.
