Im trying to upgrade to Vista Ultimate from Business, and everytime i boot up the upgrade dvd, it loads, the files, and it looks like its booting, but afterwards, the screen goes completely blank and the computer does nothing.

ive never had any problems with this before. ive done stallen's clean install and took out the hidden partition. you guys have any suggestions as to solutions?

Try turning your laptop on without the disk in the DVD drive. Then put the DVD in and see if it works.

No you need to have the other OS installed so you can install the new OS. Did you try to delete the old OS?

I'm not quite sure if i understand you correctly. Upon trying to boot from the dvd, the dvd does the 'loading files' thing, and acts as if windows was about to start, then it hangs at a blank screen.

What i want to do is install a fresh clean version of the new OS, so im not sure if not installing from the dvd would be right.

My guess is that the boot order is messed up in the BIOS. However if you can start your laptop and then put in the DVD when windows is running you should be able to do a clean install from the DVD. Try that once. If windows doesn't recognize the DVD when you put it in make sure you go to "Computer" and click on your DVD drive to run it.

ive tried messing with the boot order by putting the dvd drive first, but to no avail. but ill try booting it while windows is running to see if i can get a clean install.

everything seems fine until i get after this first screen, then afterwards it looks like windows is going to boot (with green filling status bar) then after that, the system hangs and i cant do anything.

would upgrading the bios have any effect?

Maybe. But I think either you disk or drive is bad or at least the disk needs cleaning. Consider where the failure is.... loading the files.

my discs are crystal clear so i dont think its that. my drive could possibly be bad, but it worked before doing a system restore. *sigh* this is so frustrating.

    ok,

Try booting the DVD...on another system. Don't proceed with the upgrade but that should tell you
