    Hello,

I'm thinking of purchasing the Zalman ZM-NC2000 notebook cooler for my new W500 but have a couple of questions.

Is it really worth it? Will it help extend the life of my laptop?

Do the W500's vents work with this cooler? I believe this cooler brings in air and shoots it up at the bottom of the W500.

    Thanks for your advice.

The cooling in the W500 is already first class. Would the Zalman cooler help? Yes, but it would be negligible. Save the money and buy yourself a nice sleeve if you want to extend the life of your notebook.

Buying extra cooling for a Thinkpad is unnecessary. They are already built to withstand abuse and have a cooling system that is tuned to the components they contain. Further, the Penryn chips in all of the new model ThinkPads (x200/300/301, T400/500, w500/700) run cooler than the models that they replaced due to the switch to 45nm. Unless you plan on running your laptop outdoors, in Phoenix, in August all the time, there is no reason to buy additional cooling. I used my T40 for 5 years, and it is still operational, and I never bothered with any crazy cooling solutions.

Call me crazy, but I would probably still use a cooler. Even if not running hot enough to do damage, I like to keep the chassis as cool as possible. Also, you may use a PC or ExpressCard that will run hot, so I like to have a cooler on hand. The Zalman might be overkill for something that you might not rely on, though. The Antec often sells for $10-$15, and has a build of something three times the price.
