    Hi

Is there anywhere I can download a copy of Windows XP, legally?

It's not for my x220 but rather for for my parents PC but I thought I'd ask the question here because I sure I've seen it mentioned previously.

    Thanks

you can't download XP legally unless you have MSDN or TechNet subscription.

You can buy older Desktop system with this OS installed cheaply these days ,
I have few old machines , the cheapest one is -
CPU -Amd athlon X2 6000+ Dual core 3Ghz
    Ram - DDR2 1066MHz Corsair Dominator 4x1GB = 4GB
GPU - NVidia 9800 GX2 - two 9800 gt on one card in Sli ( still a very powerfull card )
    power supply - 1000W
Mother board Gigabite ( dont remember the exact model )
Hdd -i think its 250GB or more , plenty :)
Operating System - Windows XP Media center edition Genuine copy with all discs , sticker and Service pack disc .
    ( 200 £ )
Or just search on dodgybay , there is plenty older or even broken system with this OS , and very cheap .

Thanks. So the link I've seen mentioned here several times must have been for downloading and reinstalling windows 7 only then? I've seen this link mentioned with regards to doing a clean install.

Edit: I've now found the Dell installation DVD. Problem solved.

I'm pretty sure that MSDNAA gives you access to Windows XP, as well. However, you have to be a student at a post secondary institute that is a part of MSDNAA for that.

if you're a college student in a computer-based curriculum, you might have an MSDN account you're free to use, but you'd have to speak with the IT department...i know of no other legal ways to obtain XP without buying it, except what lead_org mentioned

If you were to obtain an image to burn to use with your dell's COA it would have to be OEM image of XP...per exact version of it as well (home, Profession etc.). Thankfully with Vista/7 you don't have to deal with that anymore.
