I have found out that the week link in the design of the T61p heatsink/fan cooler is that is combined with the CPU/GPU/+some kind of heat disipating chip.

It's way to many devices to keep cool. IMO the heat generated by all 3 chips adds on to the total heat.

Heat is the main reason the FX 570m cannot be tuned to higher speeds.
If they put the GPU on the right side and the CPU on the left with separate heat sinks and fans then I'm sure the cooling would be better.

As it stands it runs fine and that is all that matters. The design fits it's performance goals but I can see the G84 going much higher than what I've been able to get.

Near the threshold for my specs(havn't found a decent cooler either):

    Score 6034.

After installing official Microsoft Window XP SP3 I scored 4112 with the standard Lenovo T61p NVIDIA drivers.

Seems like HL2 plays better with XP SP3.

    Friday night benchmarking.

I tried out a new driver. The 175.16
Great driver. Lots of nice features. Like the desktop color settings. Works well for my needs so far.

Scored 6027 on 3DMark06 with the 175.16 driver. I am going to keep it for a few weeks to see how stable it is.

    174.31 worked well for me.

New score with XP SP3 and 175.16 driver:

4084 on Vista x64 SP1, stock drivers and stock clocks.
    4492 with 174.31 and a 10% (520/773) overclock

Just for curiosity.. to get such high scores, you only do insanely high overclock or you also modified your hw in some ways? Or tweaked the drivers?

    3DMark score - with original Lenovo drivers Windows XP SP2 - 4121
    - with 174.31 driver from laptopvideo2go XP SP2 - 4367
    - with 175.70 driver from laptopvideo2go XP SP3 - 4413

Gradually increased my core clock and memory clock speeds (driver 175.70) to around 675MHz and 1000MHz respectively. Increased my 3D Mark Score to 5772. Core temperature was getting into the high 80's. Didn't do any further over clocking than that (Max is 715MHz and 1055MHz). If pushed I believe the score would breech the 6000 mark, which SonDa5 has already achieved in the past.

Settled on over-clocked speeds of 600MHz core clock speed and 800Mhz memory clock speed. The 3DMark for that configuration was 5239.

What seems to be the max stock clock score so far? I am interested how well it can potentially perform without overclocking

Also can they tell if you use rivatuner to overclock or underclock for powersaving, for terms of warranty becoming void.

The idea is to do this safely as to not destroy it. That is why you have to be careful with your temps.

The new EVGA Precision is a good application to use to find out the limits of your card and find the best tuning.

    http://www.evga.com/articles/405.asp

As far as warranty I would say that if you fry your GPU due to negligence then you are out of luck on the warranty.

That is why I only stuck with the 1 year warranty. :D

    Really...
    Be careful.

    Don't blow up your machine.

    Mine works great!!!

My only problem is that my 200GB hdd is running out of room fast.

I just bought an eclosure for my stock Lenovo 80GB hdd that I am going to start to use to store files that I don't use that often. (Photos/movies/AV..ect.)

Yea, seeing you guys are pulling 6000 3d06 scores out of this, I might wait for the potential T500 series, do a review on that and see how it performs.

I will probably get a 250gb or 320gb harddrive in mine maybe larger, depending on prices and speeds when I buy it towards end of summer.

I have about 250gb of space currently but I want to rerip my music in FLAC or ALAC which will take up about 100-125gb of space :p

Ill probably have to buy a esata card (unless it is built in to t500) and some big 3.5" drives :p

Im guessing since it is software not bios overclocking they cant tell unless you burn something out?

    I got 4377.

Is that a good score or an average one on the whole? (Not just looking at T61p, but all laptops in general.)

    Factory config -4121
    with 174.31 - 4367
    with 175.70 - 4413

I only get into the 5000's with over-clocking.

Your score depends not only on your drivers but your cpu, memory, etc. You score sounds perfectly normal.

Just got my T61p for an incredible price of ~ $1000! Did a fresh install of xp (courtesy of Arkit3kt's excellent clean install guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=188992), and reloaded all my drivers. Tried the most recent Nvidia quadro fx 570m driver and got a score of 3846 in 3dmark06.

Seemed a little low in my opinion because i think the new quadro drivers from nvidia are crappier than what was on there before the clean install. Anyway, I installed the most recent, and pretty stable 175.70 drivers from laptopvideo2go and wow, what a difference. 3dmark06 scores shot up to 4427 - no overclocking or tuning, just stock.
    http://service.futuremark.com/resultAnalyzer.action?resultId=7036411&resultType=14
I'm also positive that with very little overclocking I could get into the 5000s.

My scores seem to match with proxima_centauri's experiences - although my factory config was much lower (probably bad drivers or i installed something wrong with the fresh xp install). Definitely grab 175.70 drivers from laptopvideo2go - plays games like butter.

    Hackz. Plain and simple.

Hahah no, it was a combination of things. I had American Express points I saved up so I purchased the laptop through their rewards section. They had a 20% off discount for 1 month a little while ago + I got a student discount (look it up it should be somewhere on this forum). I bought it from this retailer called pcrush.com, which i was skeptical of at first but it worked out great. They were selling the T61p with 160 GB hard driver, Intel Core 2 T9300, 2 gig ram, quadro fx 570m, etc. for $1700 (not bad but cheapest i could find through American Express). Got that down to less than 1000 through points and discounts.

My T61p is on the way. I got the T7700 (2.4GHz) for cost reasons. Any ideas on performance difference vs the T9500?

I am not familiar with either processor but the T9300 in the T61p can bump up the 3dMark06 performance quite a bit.

I was wondering what the newest stable Geforce drivers were? Right now I am using 169.04 which are fairly old. I haven't been keeping up with the latest drivers, so I was wondering which ones people find the most stable that are newer than the 169.04 drivers.
    Thanks,
    Tim

lol, I think I beat stock T61p with my T61, lol

this is with all my stuff running, so fully loaded. Overclocked to 600/900 but shows 648/900 on the temp window in RivaTuner :)

I scored 2294 from the very first run

The new 177.92 driver came out 2 days ago. I installed the Physx drivers as well and pretty much got the same score using the 177.83 drivers on default settings.

I was able to get all the test to work so I would consider the drivers stable. Heat was a 82C at some points but at very tolerable levels.

It was recently brought to my attention by .:Cyb3rGlitch:. in another thread that performance can be enhanced in battery life through overclocking the 2D performance, which I attempted with Rivatuner.

    Drivers: 177.89
    Test: 3DMark06 during battery power, no OC'ing (169, 338, 100)
    Result: 895 3DMarks

    Test: 3dMark during battery power, OC'ed to 230, 460, 129
    Result: 1397 3DMarks

This is still astoundingly pathetic. Total max overclocking might achieve around 1400-1500 3DMarks, but I wish there was a way to get regular performance on battery power. :(

    EDIT: Reached 2002 3DMarks on battery power with 300, 600, 200
    2606 3DMarks " " " " 400, 800, 247
