so what are you going to test this upgrade with your imagenary wusb devices.. lol.. a total wate of time, btw my comments on here were revised by an admin without my permission, that is going to lead ot a date in court for the owners of this forums, how dare anyone re write someones posts in a public place.
-
-
Lol brusso, please tell me you walk into someone's private property, and then take them to court when they have you arrested for tresspassing and then say "how dare they remove me from this place w/o my permission?"
This is private space owned and operated by several people. They paid money for this, they own it, and have every right in the US constitution to do such things and they don't need your permission whatsoever.
Please take this whining somewhere else, but considering your last post where you threaten the admins and say their "on notice", I don't think you'll be around for long. -
Sorry, you said (wrote) it. Why is it that as soon as someone contradicts themselves, they always seem to blame someone else for it. My $75.00 offer still stands just in case you flip flop again.
BACK TO BUSINESS: My UWB parts are in, and I will attempting the upgrade tonight on a T61 (6459CTO) 15.4 w/ Nvidia 140. I will keep you posted. -
I keep seeing your posts about how things have been edited or posted using your name. Where are these said posts? -
He's a troll, don't bother with him. Obviously he's sniffing some pretty strong lead based paint and his brain is not working right.
Let's stop feeding the fire. There was already a thread started by him threatening the mods, which was responded to by Greg explaining the rules of the forum. -
-
KEBS:
That's quite a bag of screws that comes with our little UWB kit. I could build another laptop with all of them!
I spent a while last night looking for the LED lightbar/model plate....I don't think they sell it because the model # listed on it. My guess is that they wouldn't want someone to come along and buy the "T61p" bar and stick them on R models to fetch a higher on ebay or somehing..? Just a guess though. -
hunts for bargin doent make enough money to buy anything from me, and i am angry because the admin rewrite your posts, this is wrong, mods on forums are not there to rewrite your comments, they can delete what i write, remove a block of it and state that they did it but changing your words is a wrong all the way and no one here would put up with it..
-
Well several people have asked for examples of this happening.
You have yet to answer that, and just avoid it.
Seems to me that you're a troll, so no-one is gonna pay attention to you at all.
And like it was stated before, if you don't like it, then leave. Simple as that. -
-
How would you rate the difficulty of doing an operation like this? (out of 10)
I eventually wanna do this as well.
eventually.
-
From what I can tell, you only have 3 screws to take off and you can screw on the antenna, pop in the module, screw it in and put the 3 case screws back in...
Check out the play by play here: http://blog.mobile01.com/merlin/article/983
If people are interested enough, I may video the procedure when t61p comes in and post it so people have something to follow. -
Only downside is the LED light indicator plate, but hey, that's a miniscule issue.
-
-
Is this for the T61p 14.1 inch as well?
-
You'd have to check the schematic for the 14 inch.
I don't see why not. -
I wouldn't do it often though, i don' think this plastic is THAT resilient. Are you still going to look for the plate? i don't think the plate matters, it's not like we have an indicator light telling us our normal usb is on. -
I am getting a 14.1 T61P delivered monday, I am going to return it if it doesn't have UWB already installed. This is like buying a new car and then installing an a/c.
-
But A/C is widely used and very helpful.
UWB doesn't really have any perks yet. -
hi mcbrided
Video!!!! Once you've done, let me know
By the way, why your T61p doesn't come with UWB? -
-
-
smoothoperator Notebook Evangelist
you CANNOT upgrade a 14.1 T61/p to UWB using this method. The slot next to the Wireless Card is not there, the Ultrabay device sits adjacent to the wireless card. I am pretty sure that you cannot upgrade your 14.1 T61/p to UWB.
-
Mind you, it took all of 3 days from the time I ordered to get the UWB, antenna and the screw part from their part depot. Why UWB was holding up the main warehouse I have absolutely NO idea.

Therefore, a handful of T61p's shipped without WUSB.
On a sidenote, if I ordered these parts right now, I think I'll have a WUSB-equipped T61p earlier than the ones that ordered in July.
-
-
Did anyone get a discount/credit on your new order or was the price adjusted when you did order the "new" config..which was now missing the UWB hardware? -
-
sorry to ask an off topic question...but what's the difference between the expresss card and smart card slots? i notice many people purchasing that upgrade. i thought express card was newer tech?
-
Smart cards are used for authentication of identity typically with a PKI in corporate networks. It stores a certificate and other information about the user and allows the user to swipe it to start their authentication process.
the express card slot (I think its an expresscard/54 - someone correct me if this is wrong) can take any expresscard 34 or 54 adapter and serves no specific functionality...it can do anything the adapter is made to it. It is basically replacing the old pc cards.
Both are extremely useful for different reasons. If you dont need to use smart cards, the SC slot is utterly worthless. Most everyone will find a use for the express card slot eventually though. -
thanks
luckily i didn't order the smartcard slot since i don't need it. -
Let us know how it goes! -
OK..sorry for the delay. The new puppy took me out of the game for a few days.
I am happy let everyone know that I was successful in the installation of the UWB in a T61 (6459 CTO) 15.4" w/ 140M. Most of the discussion has been regarding the T61"p" only. Basically the same installation process, some hardware looks different from pictures (video card/fan), but pretty straight forward with Kebs excellent play-by-Play.
Start to finish-->75 Minutes. (I had detailed directions/pictures)
If you are worried about the warranty, I wouldn't be, If you were to send it in for repair, you could just remove the card and hide the antenna.. Use standard clear packing tape cut down the middle x 3.5" to secure the antennna. (What they used for the Wifi antenna).
Kebs, I have some pictures of things you mention...like tucking the wire BEHIND the mag tabs....ya, even though you mentioned it I still made same mistake! Let me know if you want them. Also, do you a icon in tray...looks like a waving blue flag? Its the UWB status icon..I have a pic.
Good luck. -
Is it possible to have bluetooth and WUSB? From the looks of the pictures, it seems like you can only have one or the other, but not both?
-
simultaneously is definitely possible.
-
Question though, from this picture (taken from MerlinWang's earlier post in this thread):
http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=9433&d=1187382849
where is the bluetooth module located? I'm assuming it's off to the right somewhere? -
I have both. Here's some general info explaining how you might even use older bluetooth and WUSB (UWB) together:
Introduction to Wireless USB
Typical Operation of USB Devices over Wireless USB:
Wireless USB has been designed to be a simple and secure method to add wireless technology to your cable-attached USB devices. These devices can include:
-Mice
-Keyboards
-Printers
-Scanners
-Multi-Function Devices
-Cameras
-Hard Disk Drives
-and Other USB Devices
Installation of USB Device Drivers over Wireless
USB should be as simple as plugging the device directly into your PC. Some USB devices such as printers, scanners, and special purpose devices require the installation of device specific drivers that are provided by the product vendor. Other USB devices such as mice, keyboards, flash drives, hard-disk drives use generic Class drivers that are pre-installed with Windows Vista and Windows XP. After completing the initial set up and pairing of your notebook PC and Wireless USB Hub, simply plug your USB devices into the Wireless USB Hub and they should immediately be recognized by your PC. If product specific drivers are required for your USB device you will receive a pop-up message indicating to insert the necessary CD. Please follow the directions supplied with the USB product on how to perform the installation.
If the product uses generic drivers that are already provided with Windows, you may see a pop-up indicating the drivers are loading but will then go away automatically once the installation is completed.
Mice, Keyboards and other Human Interface Devices
Mice, keyboards and other standard Human Interface Devices operate across Wireless USB with little difficulty. Joysticks also operate with very low latency. The devices can be plugged directly into the Wireless USB Hub and receive power from the hub for normal operation. The Wireless USB Hub also provides power for Optical Mice and other functions requiring additional power. Wireless USB has also been tested with Wireless Mice and Keyboards such as those incorporating Bluetooth or other wireless technologies. For these types of products, it may be necessary to plug the Bluetooth receiver into the Wireless USB Hub. A key benefit to the user of a notebook with a Wireless Hub is a keyboard and mouse can be kept plugged into a Wireless USB Hub at the user's desk. The keyboard and mouse will automatically become connected whenever the user is within range of the Wireless USB Hub. No additional batteries are required for powering the Keyboard or Mouse since they are plugged into the Wireless USB Hub. NOTE: One current limitation of Wireless USB when using Mice or Keyboards is the Wireless USB connection is not enabled until the drivers are loaded. This means that mice and keyboards can not be used during the PC boot-up process. This may limit the user from entering the BIOS.
Hard Disk Drives, Flash Drives and other USB Storage Devices
One of the key benefits of Wireless USB over other wireless technologies such as Bluetooth is the throughput speed to operate USB Mass Storage Devices such as HDDs, Flash Drives, and Optical CD/DVD Drives. Using the notebook computer equipped with a mini card or Adapter with a Certified Wireless USB Hub, the user should be able to achieve between 30-60 Mbps Read/Write performance. These speeds are suitable for playing DVD from Optical Disk Drives and for playing High Definition (HD) video. Because a Certified Wireless USB Hub is a generic type of USB device, the throughput when operating with a Certified Wireless USB Hub is partially restricted due to additional protocol overhead. The technology will operate at even higher throughput speeds with Native Wireless USB devices as they become available on the market.
Powering of the USB Mass Storage Device can be accomplished using several methods. If the Mass Storage Device is a lower power device, the device may be powered by a single USB port on the Wireless USB Hub. If the Mass Storage Device requires additional power, the device may have a second USB connector for supplying additional power. Finally, some larger Mass Storage Devices and Optical Disk Drives may require a separate power supply.Normally, when a Mass Storage Device is plugged into a Wireless USB Hub, a Microsoft Explorer window will appear. If auto-play is enabled when the Mass Storage Device is plugged into the Wireless USB Hub, then the user will receive the auto-play dialogue box allowing the user to select the type of operation they wish to perform. The user will also receive the auto-play pop-ups when the Wireless USB Hub comes within range of the notebook PC.. Automatic file backup software, such as the type provided by USB disk drive manufacturers should operate correctly over Wireless USB. Simply set the backup schedule as you normally would and make certain the Wireless USB Hub is within range during the scheduled times.
Digital Cameras
Downloading images from Digital Cameras via Wireless USB normally follows the same procedure as a Flash Drive defined above. When the digital camera is connected to a Wireless USB Hub a Microsoft Explorer or Auto-Play dialogue box will likely appear. Many digital cameras are shipped with additional software drivers and tools that can be used for organizing photo albums. These same drivers and applications should operate in the same manner as if the camera is plugged directly into the PC.
Printers
Printers that are plugged into a Wireless USB Hub should operate in the same manner as if they are plugged directly into the PC. All test and maintenance functions should work as normally. Please follow directions from the printer manufacturer on how to install any applications or drivers associated with the printer. NOTE: Plugging a printer into a port of the Wireless USB Hub or changing ports on the Wireless USB hub may result in multiple instances of the printer driver installed. Should this occur, it may become necessary to delete other instances of the printer driver in order to avoid confusion of what instance is actually being used.
Multi-Function Devices
Multi-Function USB Devices include products such as combination Printers, Scanners, Copiers, and sometimes with Fax Machines or Media Ports (Flash, SDIO, or other mass storage devices) included. These devices are also sometimes known as All-in-One Devices. The notebook PC combined with an Adapter or Mini Card and a Certified Wireless USB Hub should operate with these products with exception to the FAX service. An All-in-One Device that includes a telephone port for providing FAX service falls into the category of an Isochronous Device which are not currently supported in software for Wireless USB. Please see the next section regarding Isochronous Devices.
Web-Cams, Audio Devices, Speakers, FAX, and other Isochronous Devices
One category of products that is currently not supported by the software product is "Isochronous" devices. These devices can include Web-Cams, Audio Devices, some Speakers, and Telephone oriented devices such as Fax machines. If the user attempts to install a device that uses Isochronous services for all or some of the devices communications, the user will receive a pop-up message indicating "Unsupported Device".NOTE: If the Isochronous portion of the device is only a portion of the overall device, such as the case of an All-in-One Printer, the other portions of the unit will continue to operate as normal. Isochronous devices will be supported via a software update in the near future. -
Going to be grabbing the dig. video recorder tonight and will be recording the upgrade for people late tonight. Hopefully I'll have it up tomorrow

My T61 came with UWB/WUSB is there anything available now that is worth buying to use with it?
I am always looking for new gadgets/toys but I can't find much of anything except for maybe a USB hub.
Are there any announcements of things to come... soon hopefully. -
Looks like new Wireless USB products seem to be slooowly coming along. There is a Wireless USB Conference in a few weeks, hopefully someone will announce some new products:
http://www.usb.org/developers/events/Certified_Wireless_USB_DevCon
Here's a Search engine for approved USB and WUSB devices. As of today, only 20 approved show up under Wireless:
http://www.usb.org/kcompliance/view
I think the hub or wireless to the laptop will be the first wave, supported by all of the hub devices approved in the search...check it out. -

Did anyone try to put the WUSB card into WLAN pci-e slot?
