I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my T400 and sadly, the performance is not quite up to par or like what most websites claimed. In fact, I noticed that in most cases, it is in fact slower than my VISTA Ultimate 64bit with the exception of Booting up. Maybe the drivers for Windows 7 64bit are not yet matured, I dont know but Im disappointed by all the claims that leading sites are making about Windows 7.

Im thinking of switching to an Intel G2 SSD and see if it helps but really, if it sucks with a 7,200rpm spinner, but I dont see how it can improve that much.... :(

win 7 is faster than Vista in my opinion, but not sure how the 64 bit version goes. If everything doesn't work out you may want to buy a set of XP pro recovery media from somewhere (try marketplace on forum.thinkpads.com and use XP pro for the time been).

I have to agree ... Windows 7 on the T400 is slower than Vista on the T61 ... I put them side by side to test, and as far as opening programs etc is concerned Windows 7 definitely takes longer. My opinion XP is still the fastest.

Windows 7 x64 screams on my T400. Either you guys don’t have the right drivers installed—or you’ve installed something that is incompatible with Windows 7 and is negatively affecting its performance. Since switching to Windows 7, VISTA IS DEAD as far as I’m concerned.

I have a T61p and an Extreme desktop and I never saw a crash or a Vista related problem.

Youre comparing the 64bit versions, or 32bit? Seriously, as far as possible, I did tried the best drivers available from Lenovo/Intel but so far its a bit short. I know that Win 7 is a great choice for those still on XP, but for those whose already on 64bit versions of VISTA, I really dont think its worth it.... :(

For me, Windows 7 x64 works slightly quicker than when I had Vista x64.

x64 for both. The responsiveness of Windows 7 over Vista is almost like night and day.

I wish I would agree with you guys but sadly, I cant. Not sure if the latest Inf Chipset Drivers for Win 7 from Lenovo is really the cause of it...

Yup, got the latest Lenovo Intel Chipset Drivers from here. Also just realized that there's a new BIOS update for T400 dated 27/01/10 from here. Its seems that Lenovo has been promptly releasing BIOS fixes lately as the last release is 26/12/09. Will try it and see if it helps.

I have vista 64 business and now have Win 7 Pro 64 on my T400. I havent done any scientific testic, but seat of the pants difference the Win 7 is much better than Vista.

Also I recently installed an SSD and that is much faster than the 7200 drive I had from the factory.

BTW, I did a clean install of Win 7 on my original HDD. I cloned the HDD to the SSD.

It's premature to judge your Windows 7 install if it is new. If you have a lot of files, it needs time to adjust the search index. Also Superfetch performance increases with time, so make sure you run a good defrag and let it process the search index before you judge it.

in command prompt as admin, run:

    Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks
    defrag -b %systemdrive%
    defrag %systemdrive%

I am running Windows 7 on my older T60 and it runs great. I have a SSD on it now, but it seems as fast as the XP was, though my battery life looses just a little because of 7
