I'm considering selling my Macbook and getting a Lenovo since my Mac doesn't seem to handle some of my usages very well.

I have the current specs on the site:
    Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2) 25W1
    Genuine Windows Vista Business12
    14.1 WXGA+ TFT, w/ CCFL Backlight, Camera
ATI Mobility Radeon 3470 with 256MB
    2 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)8
    UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad)
160 GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm4
DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA)5
    Integrated Bluetooth PAN
Intel WiFi Link 5300 (AGN) with My WiFi Technology10
    Integrated Mobile Broadband upgradable
    6 cell Li-Ion Battery60
    2764: 1 Year Depot Warranty - TopSeller7

For $947 (w/o shipping). Is this a good deal?

Looks like a nice config. I would suggest you buy the lowest price harddrive and memory options and upgrade yourself.

I just received my T400 this week, with a very similar configuration. My comments:

I did downgrade to WinXP, and am glad I did
I havent used bluetooth, and am not sure I will (I find hardwired peripherals to be less problematic/more responsive)
I love the screen, and am happy I did NOT get the LED (I prefer less gloss)
So far things are quite fast with 2GB ram.... not sure I would notice more.
I opted for a faster HD - 7200 - thinking it would speed access. I dont have a comparison point, but it is fast.
I went with a 9cell on the config, and bought a 4 cell from the scratch dent section... this gives me an option of no battery sticking out the back.

Price looks pretty good to me. (at this point in time at least)

    Enjoy!

the spec is very well balanced. i would only upgrade the screen to WXGA+ LED and you're set.

although the laptop is fine the way it is. no biggie.

For the record, the LED screen is not a glossy screen, its matte just like the rest. The LED is brighter and uses less power, I enjoy it on my machine.

    Thanks Generator for this clarification.

And to this point, is there a simple way to validate configuration? (I know about the system info tool..... gets a lot, but not all such as whether an LED screen)

Very impressive specs. Certainly a desktop replacement. The video card on the laptop should be great for movies, etc. but I don't expect that laptop to handle games well, but it will definitely fly through everything else. I find that glossy screens have a nice anti-glare quality to them. Matte finish is hard to see outdoors IMO. I have the old t4x series, and love the build quality, so I'm sure the t400 is even better.

Ummm. You got just backwards - matte screens are also called anti-glare by some manufacturers (Apple among them), and provide much better outdoor viewability. Glossy screens will give you tons of reflections, so it is nearly impossible to use outside on even a partly cloudy day.

For the record- ALL displays on R-series and T-series ThinkPads are Anti-Glare/Matte finish. The SL-series are the only ones that offer a glossy (VibrantView is Lenovo's name for them). Glossy displays aren't offered on most business-oriented laptops.

The LED display option is currently not available on the T400 due to supply chain issues. :( Hopefully they'll get this issue resolved very soon and start offering it again.
