I am curious about the opinions of anyone who owns/uses the 7200 rpm drive because i might get one next (100 gig is in the machines preconfigured with what i need, eg. bluetooth and atheros)
Is the drive noisy? Hot? Noticeably faster during bootup or hibernation (i hibernate a lot... bunnies hibernate too not just bears)
thx.

I have a 60 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi HD. The drive is not noisy at all, you can here it working, but the fans on the lappy are louder than the HD. Right now it is running at 46 degrees C. It is also fast during bootup and hibernation. I am very pleased with it. Also, it is an IDE drive. I've seen notebooks with SATA drives now so that will give you a little more speed. Again, I am very pleased with the performance of the drive. It isn't loud, it is fast, and it isn't too hot.

The 7200RPM drives do run a bit warmer, but mind never bothered me.

I changed a 60gb 4200 rpm drive to a 60gb 7200 hitachi drive and whoaa..
Its so much faster. I really didnt notice the additional "warmth" but that could just be me. -
hmm... i likey
Thing is, i dont need the expensive high-end T2500/T2600/T2700 core duos that typically come with machines preconfigured with 7200rpm drives.... so maybe it would be more cost effective if i buy a cheaper machine that has only 40g/60g SATA and swap the HD with a 7200rpm one
How expensive is a 100-g 7200rpm drive and how hard is it to change? -
I think they are around $150 on Pricegrabber.

Are you buying a new notebook, if so post what you are looking here. We can all help you out in your search.

yes i am looking for new
I have looked at tabook to narrow down models that have a 7200 rpm (not many)
Not sure whether i should restrict myself so much... tho as i said bunnies do hibernate frequently
Thank u -
Why not just configure one to order. I got a great price from Lenovo (no EPP) on a T60 configured with the 100GB 7200 drive. Performance boost is worth it. Not noticing any significant heat issues.

I just got a lower specced T60 and will update later. I just found that with too many high-end components, good deals are just few and far between. Btw, at newegg 7200rpm's start at $115 (80g) and $135 (100g). From what I read in various threads, exchanging shouldn't be too hard, so I'll just update when 7200rpm's are a little bit cheaper.

I got the 60gig if only because I didn't want to spend the extra $100 or more. I also figured I could eventually get an external HD if needed or copy my pictures, videos to DVD if need be.
However when checking if I'm Vista compatible (I have the little sticker saying so) it seems the way Dell partitions the HD the test gives me a fail in this area. Athough I think Vista would run OK since it asks for a 20gig minimum with 15 free but recommends 40 with 15 free. Since I'm losing some, somewhere, (my computer says 37.2 (C: 25 free) and 12.5 (D back-up 13.4 free) I may end up having to repartition my drives or do a reinstall.

Interesting thought. Since I'll dual-boot on 100g, I might have to save a little bit more for windows than I was planning on. Since I yet have to re-partition my HD, you might have saved me a ton of work once vista rolls around ...

First of all, you cannot build to order in canada. Tho i could get it in the US.
Second of all, the wait in the US is horrendous, so it seems from the empirical evidence (read the "how long to ship" thread) -
Have 100 GB 7200 RPM. No noise or heat problems.
