    Hello,

I am interested in buying a lenovo r61 (T8100 core 2 duo, 15.4" WXGA screen and 2Gigs of memory) for academic use-mostly statistical packages/pdf reading etc.

Although I found everything about this laptop great (including its price which is extremely low), my only problem was with the display. I managed to play a little with it however, its screen display seems to be quite dull (I saw it in a shop I but I didn't have the change to work with it for some time in order to see if it is pleasant/tiring in the eyes)

Any opinions of owners of lenovo R61 regarding its screen would be really helpful,

Thank you very much for your help!

I have a 15.4" WXGA R61, and I find its screen serviceable. ThinkPads (with the exception of the currently-defunct "p" suffix ones, and the tablets) are not known for having great screens.

If you want significantly better screen quality, and work a significant amount of time in one location, I'd recommend looking into external monitors. And in that case, you'd want digital video out for the best quality. The 15.4" R61 cannot do DVI, but the 14.1" R61 can, through the Advanced Mini Dock. I don't know what options are available to you at a decent price. You do know that the R61 is one (soon to be two) generations behind the current models, right?

Fair, nothing great, but I don't think there's any similar laptops that were markedly better. There can be some variance in quality as they use multiple suppliers. Since you're going used if you want a really good screen, the 15" T60 with SXGA+ resolution is worth a look.

The funny thing is that I am going to buy a new R61 with a 2-year warranty so I am gonna have to stick with this model as it is on rebate for being an old model. Since this will not be my main machine I will probably tolerate the screen or get used to it...the most work will be writing code in statistical software and surfing the internet. (there is always the option of buying a screen although I want to avoid it.)
