I've had my WSXGA T61p for about two weeks now and I like it a lot. However, while watching DVDs the optical drive (DVD/CD-RW) makes a lot of noise. Is this in fact the drive that I am hearing and is there a way to correct the problem? Perhaps it is because I have not secured it with the included screw? Thanks for your help.

Theres a quiet mode in your bios, just check around the optical drive settings. Don't set it to low though, performance will suffer the slower you go but the noise will go down.

As for the screw, I believe it locks your cd rom in the ultrabay, which I don't think you want to do if you're going to use it (for a hard drive or battery).

How do you get to the hard drive noise settings in your bios?

If it's like my T61 you hold down the blue ThinkVantage button on startup. Change the CD-ROM speed from Normal to Silent.

You can also change the CD-ROM speed using ThinkVantage's Power Manager. I recommend you keep it on normal because sometimes the silent setting will degrade performance.
