I'm confused about my CD/DVD options if I buy one of these computers. As I understand it I can:
    1) buy a CD/DVD drive that operates via the USB port
    2) buy the x6 ultrabase AND buy a CD/DVD drive

Option 2 is alot more expensive so I'm wondering if there's a downside (other than inconvenience) to option 1 (e.g. might there not be enough battery power to use the CD/DVD for an extended period, for example on a plane trip)?

If I do option 2, I understand that it HAS to be the x6 (not an earlier model) but can any Lenovo/IBM ultrabay slim model be used with the x6 or do I have to use the model that Lenovo sells specifically for the x60?

    Information appreciated

I personally like option 1 better. The Matshita drives offered in ThinkPads are kinda junky. You can probably get a USB powered case and a drive for less the $100.

For the optical drive to fit and for the bezel to fit right you need to get the right optical for the x6 (for example, the optical drive for the R series is thicker than for the T/Z/x-ultrabase).

Zaz, if you look at the specs for the opticals that were released recently in 2006, they are much more impressive (at least four times faster than those last year or in the T43/t60/z60).

Costwise, you are much better off to buy the x60 loaded with the ultrabase and Recordable DVD... a couple of weeks ago during the back-to-school sale in the U.S., the whole package cost less than just the x60 costs right now. There will be another sale, possibly late this month (just a guess as to timing).

You can buy a USB powered super multi drive for $60 (memorex). But the ultrabase gives you a lot more than just the optical!

Yes, but the burn quality is not as good as other drives.

Still bad even on the new ones this year?? (i dunno i never used them... but i haven't noticed any complaints from owners of newer T60p or Z60m/t owners, who are getting these faster new drives.

While the Matshita drives do leave much to be desired, the LG-Hitachi multiburner drives which I've got on my T60 (and which fit the x6 ultrabase) are indeed better. My bro got this drive on his 14" T60 as well, and it works well so far.
