keyboards are very personal, so i'm sure a lot of people actually don't like the t400 keyboard. but i can say i like to type on this machine even more than on desktop keyboards...

with a little tweaking, it boots in about 30-35 seconds, comes out of hibernation in about 20 seconds, and wakes from sleep in less than 5. the performance is really snappy. i can open large word and xcel files very quickly. new hardware with xp (and vista too, from what i hear) really smokes!

Quick question. Since I have a retail version of Vista Ultimate with 32bit and 64bit editions, can I use the Ultimate key that comes with this laptop to install Ultimate 64bit?

Well I received my new T400 on Monday and overall it is a great machine! It's quiet and cool compared to other laptops I have used and it just feels sturdy. Really like the keyboard and I have not noticed any flex although I haven't owned a Lenovo or IBM before. The clicky keyboard is very nice. I am really in love with the trackpoint compared to using the trackpad. The battery life on this is amazing!

The only complaints I have is the thinklight is meh. It sort of does it's job but I think they should have designed a backlit keyboard instead of the thinklight. Also, after using Vista for a couple of days I have gone back to using XP. I ordered the T400 with Vista Ultimate and took the option of getting the XP recovery disks with it. I am glad I did that. It made the downgrade to XP painless. I know that I can't use switchable graphics in XP unless I go into the bios but I thought that was kind of gimmicky anyway. I don't miss the extra battery life between using the integrated and discrete graphics. If I need more I will get the 9 cell.

Overall, I have found no faults with the machine and quite happy with my purchase. Now I'm off to downgrade my desktop to XP. LOL!

I use the Thinklight on my X40 all the time, works perfectly.

    Maybe they changed the design?

I always found that the screen lit up the keys better than the thinklight ever did. Just another legacy thinkpad gadget to me.

I always liked the Thinklight (T40 and x200) and found it to be more useful than a backlit keyboard. It is unobtrusive and lights up the keys reasonably well. You can even use it to get a quick glance at a business card or other item in a dark room. I think if Lenovo switched to a backlit keyboard it would undermine the stiffness/reliability/replaceability of ThinkPad keyboards. It also may have a negative effect on battery life compared to a single LED in the lid. However, I am going to have to learn to live without the Thinklight because tablets (like my new x200t) don't have them due to their convertible screen design.

If anyone wants a good keyboard for their desktop they should check out the logitech dinovo edge..
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823126008

it feels pretty much the same as the the t400 keyboard, except it has absolutelly zero flex, is dead silent, and bottom and top row have a nice curve.... I like that they are pretty much the same size, so I dont have to readjust everytime... :)

The thinklight on the T400 isn't that great. But overall, it's the best notebook I've ever used. Enjoy your new notebook.

thinklights and backlit keyboards are both pointless. your screen is bright enough to light the keyboard.
