Buy a 64 bit vista distribution or upgrade disk.

Save your validation as is described in Stallens clean Upgrade Thread.

Decide on things such as do you want to delete the recovery petition. Remember, it's a 32 bit recovery partition. Chances are, you will want to just reformat the entire disk with your Vista Distribution disk.

After installation revalidate as per Stallen's instructions. Immediately install the chipset drivers.

Decide how much lenovo software you want to install and install it. Before you start, be sure that you have downloaded necessary 64 bit drivers. Store them on different media than your disk.

Be aware that this is not a small job.

Els, if you ordered 4GB of RAM from Lenovo cancel immediately and get the minimum amount and then buy it for much cheaper online like www.newegg.com. Very easy to upgrade the RAM, trust me.

PS if i have a separate laptop, i can download the drivers/etc to that laptop and transfer them a few at a time via a USB drive, correct?

Yes. Actually I put all of my code drivers on a USB before I did the update. I centainly did not install all of the bloatware, just part of it and there was just a lot to do because the hardware on my machine is moxed out for hardware options.

You wont need that for Vista. Vista usually installs most of not all the drivers. You essentials will definitely be installed already (ethernet etc).

well that's both true and not true. Vista seems to all the have rudimentary drivers.

Although most of the hardware I had was supported by vista (I can't remember about the finger print driver) I found that my cursor jumped all over the place with stock Vista drivers. Installing the Lenovo driver and navStar fixed that problem.
