So earlier today I ordered my first ever Lenovo. Here are the brief details...

    Thinkpad T520
    Quad core i7 2.4 ghz
    160 gig ssd
    FHD 1900x1080
    2x2 AGN wireless card
4 gig ram (I have 8 gig Kingston sticks waiting for it!)
also upgraded to the 3 year onsite / Thinkpad protection warrenty

Total cost after education discount and coupon code came to $1781.53....I am happy with that price considering what I am getting...

Now my questions, I plan to purchase the WD Scorpio 750 gig 7200 rpm hdd to put in the optical bay. In order to do this I still need to buy a caddy for it right? If so, this one will work correct?

    2nd HDD or SSD Caddy - Lenovo ThinkPad W520, W510, T510, T520 [TP-W510-T510] - $46.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

Once i put the hdd into that caddy and slide it into the optical bay, is that it? Do I have to do anything more as far as actually hooking up the hdd? Opening up the computer or anything?

Realllllllllllllllly looking forward to this machine, going to be a definite upgrade from my 4 year old Vaio.....

Yes, that caddy should work fine (I got mine off eBay but this one looks even better). No extra efforts are required - just pull out the DVD (you'll see a latch on the bottom side) and plug in the caddy with HDD, then format it and you're good to go.

^^^thanks man, that's what I needed to know...so when you need to use the optical bay to burn a cd or something you can just pull out the hdd and put the cd drive back in?

Yup, that's exactly what I usually do when I need access to CD/DVD.. but also turn off the machine before though.. just in case.

So when you slide the hdd into the optical bay it hooks up the a sata 3 slot? I am just used to plugging in a ribbon cable to a hdd to get it to work, but with the thinkpad when you slide it into the optical bay what does it plug into?

Yes, it's SATA 3 as far as I know. You also have the ability to attach one more HDD to eSATAp on the side via a cable but that's another story.

Thank you! I am a little nervous after reading problems some people had with the cracking and popping in the sound...I have my fingers crossed mine will not experience this problem out of the box...
