Ok people get this... Lenovo's much awaited "Ultra-Light" screen for the X60s, may now to ordered part#170294u
Now the outrage part. The basic X60s is now available for 1399$ minus 150$ rebate = 1249$ The Ultralight screen is also only available on the very same 1249$ basic model- no difference what-so-ever, only Lenovo has decided that they will charge....drumroll please.... please sit down if you have a heart condition.... 2000$!!!!!! or more clearly you pay an extra 750$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for the privlage of possesing a screen that is a scant 20% brighter than regular X's. The sad part of this is that lenovo/ibm should have made this the ONLY screen on the X's for no charge at all. I seriously doubt that at this price they will make any money on these.

Even though there may be more advantages to the screen besides being lighter and brighter, I doubt it's worth the $600.
-
Actually I think this is a first. I don't think *any* laptop co has ever charged 600-700$ extra simply for a brighter screen. Certainly a new experiement in greed.
-
It may just be a thing of initial availability. Or may be the screen is expensive to manufacture due to some things... But in general, when you don't limit it to laptop LCDs, there is nothing new about it. For example, top of the line processors often cost twice or thrice as much as the next level, for a 10%-20% performance increase.
-
Perhaps the low voltage CPU is more expensive.

I agree...there is probably something else that raises the price. The screen isn't worth $600-700. The CPU might be an option why it will increase, but we will have to wait to find out.
If the price is just because of the screen, I don't foresee too many people buying it. -
We need the part numbers, URLs would be even better. I suspect there are optical drive differences, battery, processor, wireless (WWAN), possibly different HDDs...or come combinations of these that you've overlooked. There's no way the screen differences account for a $750 variance. -
part#170294u only model available with that screen what-so-ever. No diffs what so ever. Call them yourself.

Let's hope the X60s Ultralight TFT is better than the usual X60 TFT. The usual X60 TFT looks pretty poor so far from those pics.

I actually have (and am typing on) the X60s right now, I should have a review by the end of this week. The screen brightness is really quite good, the viewing angles are really quite bad -- especially vertical viewing angles, but it's no different to the X41 I have really.
Build is good *except* for the first time ever a piece fell off a ThinkPad I own
The X60s is looking kind of ghetto because the status sticker overlay (sleep, charging etc.) fell off the top, I've been pulling it in and out of a bag and two-days ago I opened the lid and this thing flaked off, on the back it's really sticky but apparently the glue wasn't enough to keep it attached, I never knew the thing was a sticker -- it's like somebody just told me Santa isn't real :-/Attached Files:

That sucks man.... Lenovo sucks
I thing the new Dell guy is the cause
-
Related to the status sticker overlay which felt off, yes this sounds odd and surprisingly. Usually these are not easy to take off at all, let's hope it's just due to the demo/test machine, which maybe passed a bunch of hands before. -
-
The X41T?
- Luminance (mean value measured over 9 TFT points): 124 cd/m²
- Contrast min./enh. viewfield: 604:1/558:1
- Viewing Angles (all directions): >80°
...decide yourself.
Beside the TFT, which all in all is average, it has other shortcomings too. -

diggin up the old thread... so after some experience with x60 screens, do you think it worth to pay extra for the ultralight?
The 'extra' I am talking about is £600 in UK. I have to choose between these two configurations:
Thinkpad x60s - 17045UG (UK15UUK)
Intel Core Duo L2400 1.66GHz
2x512MB RAM
80GB hard disk
4 Cell Lithium-Ion
WinXP
finger, blue, etc.
~£1000
Thinkpad x60s - 1702HCG (UK0HCUK) ultralight LCD
Intel Core Duo L2500 1.83GHz
1x1GB RAM
120GB hard disk
4 Cell Lithium-Ion
WinXP
finger, blue, etc.
~£1600
The difference in price is not only due to the screen, of course, but I don't think I really need the bigger hard drive and faster processor of the second machine, so for me it is really ultralight vs non-ultralight. Thanks for the help! -
what is ultra light screen anyway? is this the same as IPS?
-
No it's just 30 nits briter than the usual one (i.e 150 v 180 nits).

A friend of mine bought an X60 recently, I believe he got the regular non-Ultralight version - the weird thing is is that it gets kinda hot from the HDD - which I think is strange considering its only a 100 GB Fujitsu 5400 RPM... my T60's Seagate 7200 RPM 100 GB barely ever gets that hot. It surprises me as Fujitsu drives in my experience do not run very hot at all. Another thing I noticed is that there was a lot of directional buzzing / noise that could be heard from the left side of the laptop - again I didn't bother to fiddle around with it, but you could only hear it if you had your ear directly in line of sight with the left side. Overall I dont think the screen is dim though... but then again I do not know if there are multiple brands/versions of the X60's screen as there are for my T60... although I believe his was an LG... I forget hehe. I do find it surprisingly comfortable using his laptop, though... even though there is no touchpad... although 1024x768 always will bother me... that is one reason why I didn't get an X60 instead of a T60... I did consider a X60 tablet as there was an option for a 1400x1050... on a 12.1"... that'd be so awesome

I think t60 have size advantages over X60 hence makes it cooler. I think the HDD is the same 2,5" size.
Outrage: X60s wUltralight now available for deposit
