I know a fair amount about desktop overclocking, but i just wondered what are the possibilities with thinkpad laptops?

I've got an X61 and i wouldn't overclock this to save my life, it already burns your lap running at the 2.2GHz its supposed to!

I was thinking more x200 and T series?

There are a few people who have overclocked some of the T61 machines but what is the point really? If the GPU dies it takes the motherboard with it and now your laptop is junk. Getting another motherboard is not cost effective in most cases as they run like $500 to $700(i.e. the cost of a new machine). So you are pretty much done. With desktops at least the parts are more modular, where if the GPU dies, you can get another card, but on most laptops the GPU is soldiered to the motherboard.

My advise = Don't do it.

the speed difference doesn't justify the effort, you wouldn't be running your CPU at 100% load most of the time, so overclocking isn't going to make your system go much faster.

I assume you're talking about CPU overclocking? Generally, I would say it's not worth it to do so, although I believe some people have done so with T-series Thinkpads. I have not heard of anyone overclocking their X-series.

A few people have overclocked the GPU in the T61, but I haven't heard of anyone overclocking the GPU in any other T-series or X-series Thinkpad. I assume it's possible on the W700.

Worth noting the pinmod PLL overclocking thread. Big vendors tend to TME-lock their PLLs to prevent software overclocking ability. Can check if you are TME locked by reading the PLL status config register using setfsb (see thread).
